Vikings SDCC 2017 Season 5

Whoa!!! The Vikings Season 5 trailer was dropped at San Diego Comic-Con yesterday and to no one’s surprise, it looks epic! Last season, which saw the death of protagonist, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), and the rise of his sons, Bjorn, Ivar, Ubbe, Hvitserk, and Sigurd (Alexander Ludwig, Alex Høgh Andersen, Jordan Patrick Smith, Marco Ilsø, David Lindström), and ended with Ivar killing Sigurd.

Last time on Vikings, Kattegat was attacked by an army led by Egil (Charlie Kelly). It was squashed and Egil was roasted (not roasted haha, roasted crispy) by Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick), until he gave up Harald. Torvi (Georgia Hirst) died during the battle. Harald (Peter Franzén) killed the husband of his princess, and his brother killed herin the middle of sex (Harald, not his brother). Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) came up with a very clever plan to defeat the English, and it seemed to be working. Aethelwulf’s (Moe Dunford) men got turned every which way and were picked off by crazy vikings.

Their voyage was sure to be a success – Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) sacrificed a willing human to ensure it. They captured Aelle, who showed them where their father died. Aelle was tortured via Blood Eagle (as gross as you remember), and strung up. Vengeance was theirs. Ecbert is next!

They pillaged and took home riches, women, and glory. Rollo (Clive Standen) had a ton of fun. Helga (Maude Hirst) took a replacement daughter. Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) was having a crisis of faith – fundamentalist Floki! The sons of Ragnar were visited by Odin to tell them the news of his death. They all have vengeance in their hearts. The Seer (John Kavanagh) told Lagertha that she would be killed by a son of Ragnar.

Lagertha was quite hostile towards Aslaug, who was in a daze. Aslaug tried to keep Ivar from going with Ragnar, but there was no dissuading him. He needed to finally feel like a man. The episode ended with Ivar drowning, as in Aslaug’s vision.

Ivar spent much of the episode trying to prove himself to his brothers in every way. Ragnar went to Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) and their reunion was full of love and tears. Ragnar went to Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and their reunion was tender. Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) intended to go to the Mediterranean with Floki to seek his fame and fortune. After a long delay, Ragnar wanted to go to Wessex and invade, inviting Ivar to go with him.

A new leader is poised to reign in Kattegat on History Channel’s Vikings. One of the most famous vikings in history, Ivar the Boneless, born as a cripple to Ragnar Lothbrok and Aslaug (Travis Fimmel, Alyssa Sutherland), he developed his wits and became a fearsome strategist and leader, conquering much of England.

I had the honor of interviewing Alex Andersen, the young man poised to take the lead as Ivar of this fantastic show. We chatted about his audition, the relationship between Ivar and Ragnar, and his “brothers.”
