Grant Morrison‘s Batman R.I.P. storyline is slowly-but-surely making its way toward its ending with issue #681, due out on November 26. In this ending, it seems the DC Comics icon will encounter something that causes him to retire from his duties, perhaps leading to a new Batman.
Neil Gaiman will take over in February 2009 with issue #686 called Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?, which will be two issues and basically be a tribute to Batman.
I’m not quite sure what issues #682-#685 will be. I may be missing something, but I’m sure there will be interesting.
Neil Gaiman says:
This is my last Batman story, and in some ways, it could be seen as every last Batman story…. My entire love of comics came from 1966, being 5 years old and the Adam West TV show starting in the U.K. Superman is sweet and fun to write, but Batman is more than fetishistic. … Batman sees his parents killed by criminals and vows to do something about it. Every day that there are still criminals out there, he’s losing.
There’s something sad about this, as if it’s the end of Batman. But as we all know, they never really end and he’ll always be back for more, as most of these superheroes are!
Gaiman’s two-issue special is a take on the popular 1986 Alan Moore 2-part Superman story, Superman: Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?

i still don’t get it
i’m sure after that what ever happened to arc, it’ll be back to the same old batman again.
unless this is the start of a “batman” being a bit like the green lanterns, as in every few years we get a new one…..
just sad to think that bruce wayne may go out in such an uninspired story…
