Swamp Thing

In the same interview with the LA Times that revealed Marvel topper Kevin Feige’s view of Batman & Robin as the most important comic book movie ever to be made, screenwriter Akiva Goldsman spoke about all of his other upcoming projects for DC Comics. Covered here is some new bits from the revamping of Swamp Thing and the movie adaptation of Lobo. They also talk about other projects such as Jonah Hex, which you can follow their link to read about.

The best part of everything talked about was easily Swamp Thing. At first this was just another of many remakes which actually sounded pretty cheesy, but with this interview, some excitement has begun to build up. Goldsman explained that they “want a film with real Southern, dark horror overtones, a little bit like a classic Universal horror film,” and that they actually want to make the movie closer to Alan Moore‘s popular comic book vision of the character and not based on the 80s movies.

With these two things, this new Swamp Thing has a lot more potential than it once had, though there is still a long way to go before we really see what they try to do with the property. The article even mentions that Guillermo del Toro himself considers Swamp Thing one of the “few remaining Holy Grails” of comic book characters.

Also briefly touched on in the interview is the recently announced Lobo project that will be directed by Guy Ritchie. The movie follows a giant blue alien bounty hunter who enjoys killing and does it well. Basically, Goldsman assures us that Ritchie is perfect for the job, even if you don’t see it, and that they have a design for the character pretty much all set to go. The plan is for Ritchie to shoot test footage next month, and after that, they move on to casting the role. Not that the two are alike, but in terms of titles that not everyone knows of, Lobo is shaping up to possibly become the next Hellboy franchise.

Finally, the interview included the first official poster for The Losers, which Goldsman is producing. It stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan (who has also been mentioned for the role of Lobo), Zoe Saldana, and Chris Evans, and it follows a Special Forces team who is betrayed by their leader and left to die before finding out the truth and seeking revenge. The poster takes artwork from the comic and puts the names of the actors playing the roles on their respective bodies. Click to go big!

  1. I am really intrigued as to how Lobo will turn out with Guy Ritchie at the helm.

  2. “want a film with real Southern, dark horror overtones, a little bit like a classic Universal horror film,”

That is candy to these ears.
I think this coupled with a bit of psychedelic transcendentalism, and you have got a modern classic on your hands. Swamp Thing done well has no equal.
