Geek Peek: First Look At Karl Urban In New ‘Judge Dredd’
space
The Movie God   |  @   |

The first image of Lord of the Rings and Star Trek star Karl Urban in the upcoming reboot of Judge Dredd has shown up online.

Urban will be playing the same lead role played by Sylvester Stallone in the 1995 adaptation. But while the look of Dredd himself isn’t too different here, it’s been promised that this new movie will not be anything like that attempt, and will be completely and totally faithful to the original comic which debuted in the UK’s 2000 AD magazine.

Along with Urban, the movie also stars Olivia Thirlby (Juno, The Wackness) as Cassandra Anderson, and is currently filming in Johannesburg, South Africa.

You can head on over to the other side now to read the synopsis and check out the first image of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd now!

SYNOPSIS

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.

  1. Shocking. Really poor. The Stallone outfit was much better. This visually has gone back several steps in my opinion. That shoulder pad just looks useless, literally. The guy also has no presence in the jaw, just another faceless jock. Wake up Follywood.

  2. Not impressed… I was really looking forward to a Batman Forever-esque reboot of this film, but I’m very disappointed with what I see so far.

  3. Granted, I haven’t given this one a fair chance yet but I actually really liked the Stallone version! The villains were cool, the costumes and designs were nicely translated to film without being too cartoony, and I think Stallone captured the spirit of Judge Dredd. His movie was too harshly criticized, in my opinion.

On the other hand, what about Batman Forever was good enough to apply towards a Judge Dredd reboot? I thought Jim Carrey was a decent Riddler but OMG! Two-Face was awful! Granted, I give Joel Schumacher credit for making it look like Two-Face was ripped straight from the pages of a comic book but that’s about all the credit I give him or Tommy Lee Jones for his interpretation of the character. Two-Face became a mindless, senseless thug but I suppose you could say the same about Jack Nicholsons Joker in Batman. Anyway, I cannot picture Mega City One overflowing with flourescent colors or bright neon lighting, overly cartoonish criminals or…wait for it…nipples on Judge Dredds uniform? Not trying to ridicule you (@Clint) for your opinion because everyone is entitled to their own, but you’re the first person I’m aware of to actually want anything to be more like Batman Forever. I *am* tired and going to bed shortly so please forgive me if you were being sarcastic and I simply missed that tone in the comment…but…if you’re serious, then I am curious to know more! What would you like to see different in the next Judge Dredd flick?
