Real Or Fake: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Viral Videos Hint At Arkham Asylum Breakout

A few new short videos have hit the web, and they have people trying to figure out whether they’re part of Warner Brothers’ viral marketing campaign for director Christopher Nolan‘s massive trilogy-maker, The Dark Knight Rises, or if they’re just a crafty fan helping to add some buzz to the movie.
All three videos were posted on YouTube by a user called The Fire Rises, which is the same name on Twitter that revealed the first image we saw of Tom Hardy as Bane not too long ago. Each video is very chaotic and hard to follow, but they do suggest that there has been a massive breakout at the infamous Arkham Asylum, and that anarchy now reigns. All three videos also use that haunting chant we heard on the official Dark Knight Rises website…which, interestingly enough, doesn’t seem to be there anymore.
You can see all three videos for yourself by clicking on over to the other side now, and let us know whether you think they’re real (and effective), or completely fake.
Personally, I can’t think of a better way for Nolan to end his Batman run than with the absolute insanity that would come from an Arkham Asylum breakout. Imagine that for a second, and then picture it with Nolan’s gritty, realistic touch added. The movie already has most of our money anyway, but it’s still a lot of fun to ponder.
Oh, and who’s the mysterious shadowed figure in the image above and at the beginning of the Anthony Michael Hall video? Is that also Bane, or someone else?
Whether they are or aren’t, these trio of trailers actually feel more like teasers for Arkham City instead of the new Dark Knight movie. Wouldn’t surprise me either, with the game (tentatively) being released a few months from now. If this is true, then brilliant move on Warner Bros part for linking the two using similar viral marketing tactics. If Arkham City is as successful as Arkham Asylum, that will undoubtedly create several months worth of positive buzz leading in to the summer of 2012. Just what Warner Bros could keep building on to keep Batman fresh in peoples minds as the release for The Dark Knight Rises draws nearer. Time will tell!
The best theory I read so far on the chant is “BANE BANE MATAR MATAR”. As someone noted on one of the YouTube pages, Bane is Latino in the comics, and “matar” means “kill” in Spanish. Perhaps these are the prisoners chanting as Bane escapes the prison where he spent the majority of his early life?
Batman-On-Film says it’s fake, and he’s pretty much in the know with Batman/WB stuff. Plus, it’s clever editing, but pretty much fanmade. I might be wrong, but you can tell the difference between the two. Lastly, we already had an Arkham breakout, of sorts, in Batman Begins.
