Pearl Jam Twenty

Cameron Crowe‘s Pearl Jam Twenty, a documentary about the rock band Pearl Jam, will premiere in September at the Toronto International Film Festival before making its way later that month to select theaters.

A 384-page hardcover book will be released on September 13 in conjunction with the film, as well as, of course, a 2-disc soundtrack, which will include 29 unreleased tracks (see full track listing here below). The soundtrack comes out on September 20, 2011, but you can take a listen to one song from it, “Crown of Thorns,” right now in the player below.

You can also check out the trailer for the film here below. The doc is said to contain tons of rare video, interviews, and music of the Seattle band, who’s now celebrating 20 years together, as well as many hours of recent footage shot by Crowe. If you’re a fan of the band, this is going to be a real treat.

I’m thrilled that “Crown of Thorns,” a cover of the haunting Mother Love Bone tune, will be on the soundtrack. After their singer Andrew Wood died in 1990, Mother Love Bone guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament collaborated with Soundgarden’s Matt Cameron and Chris Cornell — the latter of whom was Wood’s roommate — on Temple of the Dog for one record as a tribute to their late friend. The other musicians on the album — singer Eddie Vedder and lead guitarist Mike McCready — would later join Gossard and Ament in forming Pearl Jam (in recent years, Cameron has been behind the skins for PJ). The version of “Crown of Thorns” on the soundtrack was taken from Pearl Jam’s 10th Anniversary tribute to Wood. [A few of us here at GoD went to see Pearl Jam in October 2009 in Philly, where they did “Crown of Thorns” – check out the video we shot of the song.] Temple of the Dog’s “Say Hello 2 Heaven” is also on the album, along with a live version of “Black” from the band’s unreleased 1992 MTV Unplugged appearance.

Crowe and Pearl Jam have some history together, so it’s not surprising that the filmmaker would do this documentary. Crowe wrote and directed the 1992 movie Singles, a romantic comedy that centered on a group of twentysomethings in Seattle during the beginning of the grunge movement. Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament all play small roles in the film (as does Chris Cornell) and the band has a song on the soundtrack. So Crowe was really there from the beginning of grunge, as well as for Pearl Jam’s infancy. (Crowe’s then-wife, Heart’s Nancy Wilson, is from Seattle.)

Pearl Jam Twenty opens in select theaters for one night only on September 20, with a full week run starting Friday, September 23rd select areas. It will debut on television on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 9PM ET/PT as part of the PBS American Masters series.
