DCU Online Goes Free In Late October

It’s the news I’ve been waiting for. Sony Online Entertainment announced today that their DC Universe Online MMO will go to a free-to-play in late October.

Players will be able to download and play the once costly title absolutely free through both the Sony Playstation 3 and PC. But those who have paid, don’t freak out just yet, you’re still going to get something. In fact, in this same announcement, SOE also stated that they will be offering three different tiers of membership: Free, Premium, and Legendary.

Free: Up to two playable characters are available. Basic playable content available. Purchasable upgrades, etc.

Premium: The requirement for this level is spending up to $5 for content. Allows more characters slots, higher cash limits, and more room for inventory than the free model. These are still limited, but more can be purchased in-game.

Legendary: $14.99 price model per month. Allows the maximum amount of features and benefits. All DLC is included in this price, as well.

I got the chance to play through the Beta and I loved it. But, at the time, a $50 to $60 game with an additional $15 a month charge was a little out of my price range. Now that this game has been announced to be free, I’m definitely going to be making my way into this MMO. This really does seem like a great pricing model now, compared to the $15 monthly fee plus in-game purchases. I’m not saying that we should have been allowed to play the game absolutely free all along, because people worked hard to make a fun and in-depth game, but the monthly fee should have had some sort of benefits, and the new model seems to be a great way to go.

But what about you? Did you shell out all this money from the start? Were you waiting on this news since the game was announced like I was? Let us know in the comments section below!

  1. I shelled out the money, so I’m glad to hear I’ll get benefits for it.  I did not pay the $15/month fee, so I haven’t even played the game yet.  I’m looking forward to it.
