Each month Amazon offers 100 album downloads for $5 each at their MP3 store. Among the more notable titles released this month is the original music score for the Marvel Studios summer superhero spectacular Thor.
Composed by veteran movie music man Patrick Doyle, the Thor soundtrack is an exciting and suitably bombastic score, which is very fitting given that the movie it accompanies is an epic tale of a universe-spanning conflict between warrior gods that has its roots in both Norse mythology and 1960’s comic book storytelling. I wrote a review of the soundtrack back in May, which you can read here.
In my original review I wrote, “I hope once I see the movie Thor my appreciation of Patrick Doyle’s solid, but mostly forgettable score will improve.” Well after a few enjoyable viewings of Thor Doyle’s sweeping and swooping score has really grown on me, much like the movie itself. It’s a grandiose work of high adventure and lush emotional themes that manages to tell a fantastic story without requiring images. Yet when the score is matched up to the movie both merge to create a cinematic experience that is sweet, exciting, touching, dark, and fun. Thor was one of my absolute favorite movies of the year and Patrick Doyle’s memorable score lives up to the best traditions of epic adventure music.
