Raising Unicorns: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Starting and Running a Successful – and Magical! – Unicorn Farm is a joke that goes on far too long. Jessica S. Marquis offers excruciating details on such things as the many varieties of unicorns, how to select the breed that’s right for you, how to dress so you don’t scare a unicorn, and how much glitter each variety farts.
Marquis’ many charts and graphs are punctuated by Fancy Fun Facts, Case Studies, and Testimonials. Kevin Hedgpeth‘s beautiful illustrations are the highlight of the book. Raising Unicorns is all cuteness and giggles that grew tiresome for me by the end of the first chapter.
Of course it’s all meant to be tongue-in-cheek, but if I actually read all 178 pages, I’m afraid my tongue would permanently cramp sideways. But hey, if you’ve got the tender heart of a 12-year-old girl who still believes in fairy tales or an endless appetite for ironic saccharine, Raising Unicorns just might be for you.
