When James Cameron’s Avatar took movie theaters by storm, obliterating every record in sight including the seemingly untouchable $600 million mark set by another Cameron movie, Titanic, very few people thought a day would soon come where that new record fell.
Shockingly, though no movie has or likely will come close for a long time, it’s a video game that has nudged its way into Avatar‘s personal record bubble. Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has reached $1 billion, and it has done so in only 16 days. That tops Avatar, which pulled it off in 17 days.
It’s also the third significant record MW3 has surpassed after hitting $400 million in 24 short hours and $775 million in only five days.
Obviously video games cost a bit more than movies with a $59.99 price tag each, but far fewer people are out buying games than there are seeing movies and these are unheard of numbers for a game to pull off.
Now the only question is how long before something else scores even bigger numbers. Will it be next year’s Call of Duty title, something else coming soon, or will we not see something like this for a while?
