I’ve never seen an episode of The Avengers TV show which this comic is based on, and I’ve never been a huge Grant Morrison fan. So, why did I ask to review Steed And Mrs. Peel #1? For something different. Thankfully, although I was a little confused at times, I was very pleasantly surprised.

Nothing really needs to be said about writer Grant Morrison, so I’m not going to. As I stated before, I’m not at all familiar with The Avengers television series, but I really don’t think that it hurt my enjoyment of the book at all. Granted, there were a few things that I didn’t appreciate like, somebody who had been a fan of the TV show, but all in all, it’s a great mystery/spy story.

What surprised me the most was the amount of humor in the book. All in all, a really fun, interesting read. If you’re a fan of the property, I have a feeling you’ll love it. If this is your first exposure to The Avengers, like me, you’ll definitely enjoy it on a whole other level.

Legendary artist Ian Gibson totally delivers, just like always, in this issue. I’m not sure if the company had the rights to use the likenesses of the actors, but Gibson makes them look just enough like the stars of the show without it being distracting or blatantly drawing from production stills. Gibson makes this book about 90 percent more enjoyable with his fantastic art.

Boom! Studios made an interesting move by deciding to reprint this series. And, after reading this issue, I’d say they made the right choice. I have to wonder if it’s a random decision or that maybe they’re reprinting this to gauge interest at publishing a new series. Whatever the purpose, I’m glad that it was published again, I missed it the first time around and now am glad to read this 6-issue series.
