Strange Sounds Heard Worldwide: Is It Viral Marketing For ‘Godzilla,’ ‘Cloverfield 2,’ Or Something Else?

Strange Sounds

Every once in a while some kind of unexplained phenomena hits the web in the form of a video (or many videos), and everyone goes wild trying to figure out just what in the hell it really is.

One such phenomena has reached these heights recently. In numerous videos posted from all over the world on YouTube, a very loud, very intimidating noise is heard. Listening to it you can only assume that a giant alien craft, Godzilla, King Kong, or some dinosaurs are about to come barreling into your back yard. So is it a clever viral marketing campaign, an elaborate hoax, something natural, or something else?

Continue below to check out videos from multiple locations experiencing these mysterious strange sounds and share your thoughts!

In most cases these are just a well-executed hoax—and props to the ones who pull them off well enough to get the planet debating—but sometimes it’s also a smart viral marketing campaign for an upcoming movie or something else. And perhaps it’s neither and there really is something strange going down.

Sometimes the sound has a very mechanical feel to it and sometimes it sounds like someone dubbed the mating calls of a blue whale over shots of various parts of the world. In all likelihood it is something made by one of us to fool the rest of us.

There is both a new Godzilla movie in the works, and there’s always Cloverfield 2 being whispered about (we know how crafty they can be with the virals). So is it one of those, something else entirely, or should we legitimately be terrified? The Mayans have seen to it that, in the very least, most of us will be on edge when it comes to anything like this, so it’d be a brilliant time to take advantage of those fears some have for the sake of entertainment.

You be the judge!

  1. I heard the sound in London!! on the night of the 1 at 4 in the morning. these videos are not fake…

  2. I have heard the same thing.  I definitely would bet my life almost that it’s not someones idea of a joke.

  4. I have to point this out. In most of the videos where there are people walking around… Why don’t they seem to look like they hear it. I duno about you. But if I were to hear that. I’d stop and look around… Mostly sounds to me like it’s from War of the Worlds noises. That and you don’t see anyone else in the video asking what the hell the sound is. I duno it could be real but I live here in Canada (where most of those vidoes were taken from) and I’ve not heard a thing. Not to mention when I was watching… The first thing that came to mind was Science… There’s a level of Air beneath the earths crust right? Maybe there’s too much weight on it and it’s starting to… Well buckle under the pressure? I don’t know. It would make sense for all the mechanical noises because there’s a lot of pipes and stuff. Right?

  5. Methinks they’re hoaxes.  I mean, wouldn’t every news station on the planet be jumping on a story like this if there really were anything to it?  And the fact that the videographers were obviously not shooting anything intentionally prior to the noises (hello, parking lot and trees?!) feels like a Blair Witch to me.

  7. I live in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I can assure I heard these sounds on the evening of January 18th. I thought they sounded like war of the worlds and made me want to close the blinds. Very eerie sounding. I was surprised to go online immediately after and see that others have heard the same thing. I woke my wife up and she also heard the sounds. If this is a viral marketing campaign then they are using some kind of loud speaker to broadcast the sounds in the real world and letting the youtube community run with it. All I know is I heard the sounds and my wife heard the sounds. Also, I spoke to my mother who has a friend who also heard them. Mind you, the sounds weren’t as loud as I’ve seen in the videos, but unmistakably identical. They’ve also been described the same way I initially felt in that they sounded like something out of war of the worlds and were very eerie.

  10. a lot of people carry cameras on them nowadays, and they’re usually on in the form of a phone that can record in just a few seconds.  but we’ll need more information to say what, if anything is the reason for these.

  11. Well THAT was a waste of close to fifteen minutes. This is obviously publicity for some new blockbusters.  Let me know when this campaign gets interesting or when the actual movie comes out(unless it’s Cloverfield 2—we all know that’s gonna suck just like the original).

  18. These “strange noises” sound nothing like Godzilla’s iconic roar, or any monster from the Godzilla franchise I can think of, so I really don’t get why anyone would guess its Godzilla. If this is viral marketing, my guess would be Cloverfield 2, since it sounds just like the Cloverfield monster (at least going by memory, I haven’t watched that turd since it first came out). But I doubt its even that, its probably just some lazy hoax by someone on youtube using the cloverfield sounds.

    Comment by Leechcode5 — January 22, 2012 @ 11:56 pm

  19. These strange noises are not new. There was a flap back in August of 2011, and now there’s a resurgence this month. Some videos from 2011 are mistakenly/intentionally described as being from 2012. I’m sure some are fakes. But some reports are years old, so a viral marketing campaign is unlikely.

  23. There actually have been a few news articles out of the USA.  Reddit had a post up recently that included a couple of links to news posts.  One was in Borneo if I recall correctly.

  24. There’s a bunch of others online too including a really spooky one allegedly recorded at 2:30 a.m. But I’m starting to move towards hoax/viral as well. The key is the last clip in that batch posted here. The camera guy focuses in on a group of people having a conversation on the ground. I’m sorry, if THAT was sounding in the sky I’d either be running for cover or at least looking up at the sky. The fact the last one sounds like amplified whalesong also suggests hoax. That said, I did a YouTube search and there are a number of obvious hoax videos mixed in with others that you can’t tell, so who knows?

  25. Really badly done hoax and or viral videos. Two things, 1) Why are these people just filming randomly and 2) Why are there no reactions to any of the sounds being heard? If it were real wouldn’t they be a little freaked out. Especially in the two videos were there were actually people in them, none of them showed any reaction or response.

  26. Youre so smart…youve debunked a marketing stunt. Dont you feel superior now? Enjoy it.

    Comment by C White — January 25, 2012 @ 11:57 am

  27. An obvious marketing stunt, but probably not for Godzilla since it would be rather hard for him to be in all those places in that short time. More than likely it is for Pacific Rim or Cloverfield two

    Comment by Jrp6048 — January 29, 2012 @ 11:31 am

  28. Yes I do. Are you upset because you didn’t? Dont feel bad little friend it takes everyone time to catch on to these things.

  29. My wife and mother-in-law swore up and down they kept hearing a train during that time and I argued with them that that was not possible it must have been a semitruck or similar.  I’m convince otherwise after hearing it happened world wide.  I trust them both and I’m sane.  We live in El Paso, TX and right now I don’t know what that was…

  30. I’m not saying that i belive in that crazy conspiracy teories out there, i cant say wahat it is, but i heard it by my own ears.
If i didn’t i probably wouldn’t belive it either, so i don’t blame you gus for saying it is just viral video :D

    Comment by Arnost Senkyr — February 9, 2012 @ 6:36 pm

  31. I have had direct family members hear the sounds and frankly if it is a hoax it is not being done on the video editing side. This would mean someone would have to be travelling quite a bit with a phenomenal audio source and playing this stuff live in such a way that the sound is heard overhead and not from a single location. At this point, I can’t consider this just a hoax.

    Comment by marco — March 13, 2012 @ 2:39 pm

  32. I just listened to the video – the very first part that was supposedly recorded in Chicago is exactly what I heard in smalltown, Arkansas in January of this year that woke me up early one morning. The video may be a hoax but the sound is definitely what I heard without a doubt!! When I heard this sound, I had absolutely NO idea this sound was being heard other places around the world.

  33. HUmmm.. maybe its because you haven’t been watching the news. It was on all over but only quickly talked about.

    Comment by Jus — August 10, 2012 @ 7:24 pm

  34. Sorry to say but its not hoax. im 32 years old, im not a kid.
i already in person did hear that same voice in istanbul 21.09.2012 and 18.09.2012
So its not a hoax. i awoke because of this voice. couldnt pinpoint the direction of voice because it was everywhere..
then i checked on net and saw that lots of people has experienced the same thing.
i dont know what it is, poleshit ? aliens ? oceans (dont believe oceans, we dont have oceans here.. we are actually far away from it..) ? i really have no idea what it is..
but i know its real. because i experienced it already in person.
