Record Store Day 2012

Today is Record Store Day, an international observance that takes place on the third Saturday in April each year. The event is meant to put a spotlight on music, as well as independent record store owners, and each year, there’s tons of special vinyl releases.

Below is a list of all the special vinyl releases for today, from artists like Iggy Pop David Bowie, T-Rex, The Beatles, Cradle of Filth, Deep Purple, Sex Pistols, Metallica, and The Clash. (Ok, those are the artists I like, but there’s also Bruno Mars, Ryan Adams, Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, and a bunch of other bands/artists I’ve never heard of.)

Speaking of Iggy Pop, he’s this year’s official ambassador for Record Store Day — he’s also celebrating his 65th birthday today!

Note – I grabbed the list below from the Wiki page, but visit the Special Releases page at the official Record Store Day website for more information. I already spotted things on the website that aren’t on the Wiki, like the Amanda Palmer & The Grand Theft Orchestra.

Now, hurry out to your local record store* and snag one of these babies. Oh, and if you’re not sure what “vinyl” is, it’s the large round black “CD” that old people talk about owning back in the day and need a special “record player” to play it. Basically, if you don’t know what it is, this day is not for you.

* By the way, this is assuming you still HAVE a local record store, because I don’t. Here in Brooklyn, NY I grew up with the BEST record shop ever – Zig Zag Records, where I purchase the best thrash metal albums ever. Still have all my vinyl of Slayer, Metallica, Overkill, Nuclear Assault, and Testament, as well as 8 – yes 8 – copies of KISS Destroyer. I miss you, Zig Zag!!! Also, now I’m thinking about how one day there will be a CD Store Day.
