A sequel to Kick-Ass has been under gestation for quite some time and although the first film wasn’t the runaway hit many had hoped it would be, it still made a significant amount to get the sequel treatment. Now Universal is in talks to make Kick-Ass 2. However, since Matthew Vaughn is busy developing the sequel to X-Men: First Class, Jeff Wadlow will be brought in to direct the film. Wadlow is best known for writing and directing Cry_Wolf and the underground fighting plotted Never Back Down.
According to Deadline, Universal wants to begin filming Kick-Ass 2 in August.Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all in negotiations to reprise their respective roles. The three have been very vocal about reprising their roles, so it shouldn’t be that hard to get them to sign on the dotted line. Since the film will be under a different studio banner, new deals will have to be made.
Even though Vaughn isn’t directing the movie, the director is backing it and is fully supportive of handing over the reins. Sure Wadlow’s resume doesn’t speak volumes, but he did write the script to Kick-Ass 2. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Vaughn act as a producer of the sequel.
I am glad to see that the sequel is finally gaining traction. The first Kick-Ass was a fantastic colorful blood-splattering film and I hope its sequel stays in the same vein as its predecessor.
