Could Philip Seymour Hoffman Take Vital Role In ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire?’

Philip Seymour Hoffman

When we last heard about a casting for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, we had Garret Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, and Armie Hammer all in the running for the role of Finnick Odair. But as the weeks progressed, it was revealed that Kitsch had taken himself out of the running and film producer Nina Jacobson said that neither Hammer nor Hedlund were in the running from the start. So while the actor claiming the role of Finnick Odair has yet to be revealed, we are learning of a new name that could possibly take another pivotal role in this sequel.

According to Variety, Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been offered the role of Plutarch Heavensbee. A bit of a spoiler for those who hasn’t seen the movie or read the book follows, so turn back know if you don’t want to know any more.

Plutarch Heavensbee is the new game maker hired for the Third Quarter Quell. He replaces Seneca Crane (played by Wes Bentley) who failed to take responsibility of the result of Katniss Everdeen’s insubordination at the games. Seeing as he is the designer of the new games, Heavensbee will be one of the most important characters in the movie and that kind of a role should not go to just anyone.

Looking at who they want to cast, it is an ambitious choice, but it is also a long shot. Hoffman is known to gravitate towards smaller indie roles than he is known for his roles in tentpole films. So if he doesn’t end up taking the role, who would you like to see play as Plutarch Heavensbee?
