Mia Wasikowski and Zoe Aggeliki Vying For Role In ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

We are a little over a month away from the start of production of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The second entry in the famed Suzanne Collins novel will be taking a new direction with Francis Lawrence replacing original helmer Gary Ross for the big-screen adaptation. But as we get closer to the start date, we have yet to hear of any additions to the cast.

We recently heard that Philip Seymour Hoffman was among the frontrunners to be cast as Plutarch Heavensbee. But this report isn’t a follow up on that; instead, we are hearing of two names that may be vying for a role in the film.

The Playlist reports that Mia Wasikowska and model-turned-actress Zoe Aggeliki are in the mix to play Johanna Mason. Now if you have not read Catching Fire, spoilers will follow.

Johanna is a citizen of District 7 and former Hunger Games victor who is just a few years older than the previous victors Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta (Josh Hutcherson). She is sarcastic and contentious. But above all, she plays a huge role in Catching Fire and the third story, Mocking Jay. So it’s important that they get this part right.

Waikowska is a very familiar name in the industry, having launched her career in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. But she has also given strong performances in Jane Eyre and The Kids Are All Right. However, Aggeliki is a relatively new face, having been in no films, so it will be hard to judge her capability to grasp the character. She did earn roles in the upcoming R.I.P.D. and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.

Even though the two are in talks, The Playlist says that Aggeliki is the more likely to sign the deal. It may be short of a confirmation, but as we get closer to the date, we will soon learn of who will be playing Johanna, Plutarch, and Finnick.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is expected to hit theaters on November 22, 2013.
