You like digital comics? Well, the majority of the world apparently does, according to DC Comics, as evidenced by the increase in their digital comics sales this year.
Along with the New 52, the company’s relaunch of most of their ongoing monthly series, DC has been really ramping up their digital presence and has increased its digital comic sales by 197% compared to this same time last year.
DC also announced this week that it’ll now start selling its single issues across all the major digital bookstores, like Apple’s iBookstore, Amazon’s Kindle store, or B&N’s Nook store, and will continue to offer their titles through digital comics online retailer comiXology.
VentureBeat’s (and occasional Geeks of Doom contributor) Tom Cheredar spoke with DC Entertainment SVP of Digital Hank Kanalz, who said the sales boost comes from a combination of really good stories, “digital first” series like Smallville Season 11 and Superman Beyond, and awesome media-catching events like Superman hooking up with Wonder Woman and Clark Kent ditching his newspaper job at The Daily Planet to join a news blog.
“Digital is a big part of how I think we’ve been able to boost overall sales [print and digital]…. It really proves what digital (comic books) can accomplish, because not everyone has a comic shop near them.”
According to DC, their recent sales boost also means they’re outselling their main rival, Marvel, in digital sales. At this time, Marvel is not selling their single issues through the iBooks, Kindle, or Nook stores.
