Maleficent

Disney is setting itself up to be a force to be reckoned with for the next few years. That is because they have shifted a couple of dates for some of the biggest tentpoles. In 2014, we’ll be seeing a new Muppets, two Marvel flicks, a live-action reimagining of a classic fairy tale, and Brad Bird‘s 1952.

If that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, the 2015 slate should make you really happy. In 2015, we’ll be seeing Pirates 5, The Avengers 2, Ant-Man, not one but two Pixar films, and a little something called Star Wars Episode VII. Pretty neat.

Hit the jump to get the full schedule and to find out which films have been cancelled.

That 3D re-release of The Little Mermaid that was suppose to open in theaters this September has been canned. The studio has seen mild to wild success when it came to their films being re-released in 3D. No official reason was given as to why the move was made. Box Office Mojo posted the new release date as TBD, so there still may be hope yet to see this film on the big screen again.

Now on to the most important part of this post, the new release dates. Box Office Mojo posted the newly updated release schedule for the respective films. Most of the Marvel and Pixar films will stay in place, but The Muppets 2 and Maleficent> are making the biggest changes.

Originally The Muppets 2, starring Tina Fey and Ty Burrell, was to open in theaters in December of this year, but seeing as it was sharing a release date with the Tom Hanks starring vehicle Saving Mr. Banks, another Disney-produced film, one of the two had to be changed. So The Muppets 2 will be hitting theaters on March 21, 2014.

Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as the villainous sorceress, was originally scheduled for a March 14, 2014 release, but now it is being pushed back to July 2, 2014.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5, which recently signed on a new screenwriter, is now scheduled to open in theaters on July 10, 2015. An excellent release date given that the film doesn’t even have a cast or a director to begin with.

Finally, there’s 1952. Produced by Damon Lindelof and directed by Brad Bird, the mysterious film we haven’t heard much about will open in theaters on December 19, 2014. On top of the new release date, the press release has confirmed that George Clooney will star.
