This Tuesday, Voivod‘s new album, Target Earth, will be released in North America on CD and MP3. But, from now until the release date, the full album is streaming online for free at Loudwire, courtesy of Century Media Records. Take a listen to the album here below.
Target Earth is the 13th studio album from the Canadian progressive thrash metal band and is the first with new guitarist Daniel Mongrain aka Chewy (replacing the late Denis D’Amour aka Piggy, who passed away in 2005) and marks the return of original bassist Jean-Yves Theriault (Blacky), who hasn’t been on a Voivod album since 1991’s Angel Rat.
The band, which had former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted as part of their line-up from 2002–2008, is coming up on the 30th anniversary since their first album, 1984’s War and Pain. (Jason Newsted talked about his experiences in Voivod and how singer Snake influenced his own vocal style in Geeks of Doom’s interview with Newsted). Be on the lookout here soon at Geeks of Doom for our interview with drummer Michel Langevin (Away).
Recorded at producer Pierre Rémillard’s Wild Studios in Quebec and mixed by Sanford Parker (PELICAN, NACHTMYSTIUM), Target Earth features artwork by drummer Away (Michel Langevin), who used color schemes from each one of the band’s previous albums to make this new masterpiece. The album brings back original bass player, Blacky (Jean Yves Thériault), marking his first recordings with the band since 1991’s Angel Rat. It’s also the first to feature guitarist Chewy (Daniel Mongrain), who cut his teeth playing guitar to the late Piggy’s (Denis D’Amour) riffs, and thus has matched his style to a tee. VOIVOD, as a full group, hadn’t sat down to write a record together since 2003’s self-titled album. The end result harkens back to the group’s late 80s output and after 30 years together as a band, one of their best yet.
