Fans of Pixar’s Toy Story franchise have been somewhat spoiled not only by three wonderful movies, but by a collection of shorts that also feature the voices of all of the movies’ main stars.

Most of those shorts are only a few minutes long, but that will not be the case with Toy Story of Terror, and upcoming Halloween special once again featuring all of your favorite living toys.

The special will run 30 minutes in length, and will once again feature Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Buzz (Tim Allen), Jessie (Joan Cusack), Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Mr. Pricklepants (Timothy Dalton), and Trixie (Kristen Schaal). Also, a toy you might remember being blown up by Sid in the original movie, Combat Carl (to be voiced by Carl Weathers in the special)—also thought to be the first “death” in a Pixar film—will also make an appearance.

The special will follow the toys as they’re along with Bonnie and her mom on a road trip to see grandma. The trip takes a turn for the worst when one of Bonnie’s mom’s tires blows and the group is forced to stay at a nearby motel, where one of the toys goes missing.

The special draws inspiration from horror classics like Psycho, Aliens, and Predator, while also finding a way to still be okay for kids.

Director Angus MacLane explains, saying:

“There was some support to make a scary, but not necessarily Halloween-themed half-hour Toy Story special for television. There was some concern early on about not making it too scary for kids. I think we’ve done a good job of balancing staying true to Toy Story and staying true to the genre. As far as adults are concerned, I’ve always thought that we make these movies for ourselves. I think it’s funny and like the other Toy Story films, I think there is plenty of stuff in there that only adults will get.”

The special will also be a chance to see how the toys are getting along since they’ve been passed along to young Bonnie. MacLane added:

“This is the first time that they’ve been on a road trip away from the house, so we’re exploring the relationships and the things that might come up on a road trip with toys, some of whom have lived and worked together for years, while others have only just met. They definitely have a family dynamic that is fun to see now that they’re all together on one road trip.”

Toy Story of Terror will air some time in October on ABC.
