I didn’t think Doc Savage #2 could get any better than the first issue, but I was SO WRONG!! If the quality keeps up, this series could go on forever.

Writer Chris Roberson REALLY knows his Doc Savage. And I mean REALLY KNOWS HIS DOC SAVAGE! This new issue is set 10 years after the first one, and there’s some really interesting twists and turns in the ongoing story. What’s even more impressive is that this is a total standalone tale, but with the way Roberson tells it, it’s very evident that this is just one chapter in an ongoing arc. The writer introduces a lot of hallmark Doc Savage trademarks here, the Fortress of Solitude and Pat Savage, just to name a couple. This is one of the most solidly written comics that I’ve read in a while.

Artist Bilquis Evely is FANTASTIC!! This lady could draw anything and make it look awesome. There’s a LOT of supporting characters in the Doc Savage universe, and Evely gives each and every one of them a distinct look so that they’re instantly recognizable, not to mention the way she draws the background, scenery, and technology of the day. Evely really knows how to get some kinetic energy across the page to the reader. This book is full of action, but it’s also full of panels of people looking through microscopes and each page is as perfect as the last one. I really hope Dynamite keeps her on this title for the long haul.

It is REALLY rare that a second issue is just as assessable to new readers as the first, but, that is totally the case here. If you missed the first issue, you don’t have to worry at all, you can pick this issue up and jump right in. And THAT folks, is how you make a comic book!
