Lionsgate has released an action-packed new trailer for The Expendables 3. You can watch it here below.
This preview not only gives us a gander at the large-scale action set-pieces we’ve come to expect from the franchise but also provides us with some story details. Not much though. We already knew Mel Gibson was playing the villain and was a former friend and partner of Sylvester Stallone‘s character. The good guys get an infusion of young blood. Lots of stuff blows up. Corny jokes and cliched dialogue are exchanged. Rinse, repeat, roll credits.
I know these movies get a lot of hate, but I love them dearly. It’s fun to watch some of the biggest action stars of the 1980s get together, knock back a few dozen brews, smoke every Cuban cigar on the planet, and then go turn some Third World countries into smoldering holes in the ground. It’s overblown comic book fantasy for the wannabe macho man in the girliest of girly men. If the first two Expendables movies were celebrations of the glorious excess of ’80s action filmmaking, then the third entry in the series looks to be moving into the ’90s with ass-kicking icons like Wesley Snipes and Antonio Banderas joining in on the fun. I can’t wait.
The Expendables 3 is directed by Patrick Hughes (Red Hill) from a screenplay written by Stallone and Olympus Has Fallen scribes Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt. The film co-stars Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Harrison Ford, Kellan Lutz, Ronda Rousey, Kelsey Grammer, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and opens in theaters on August 15, 2014. Bruce Willis will have to wait in line for a ticket just like the rest of us common folk.
