Many have been waiting to see what Ultron would look like in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Leaked photos gave an incomplete depiction of the character, since most of the motion capture would be finalized through the post production process. Now a week before Comic-Con is about to kick off, Entertainment Weekly has given us our first look at the villain, with the very high possibility of seeing him in action during Marvel’s panel at Hall H next Saturday.
Plus Joss Whedon spills some juicy info about the film’s plot, how Ultron fits into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and much more. Hit the jump to see Ultron’s first look and read all the details on the highly anticipated sequel.
First up, Whedon’s quote on Avengers: Age of Ultron:
For better or worse (trust us, it’s worse), his Tony Stark has devised a plan that won’t require him to put on the Iron Man suit anymore, and should allow Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk to get some much needed R&R as well. His solution is Ultron, self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence designed to help assess threats, and direct Stark’s Iron Legion of drones to battle evildoers instead.
The only problem? Ultron (played by James Spader through performance-capture technology) lacks the human touch, and his superior intellect quickly determines that life on Earth would go a lot smoother if he just got rid of Public Enemy No. 1: Human beings. “Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, “˜Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better’; he’s not just going “˜Muhaha, soon I’ll rule!'” Whedon says, rubbing his hands together.
“He’s on a mission,” the filmmaker adds, and smiles thinly. “He wants to save us.”
Whedon adds that Ultron will be able to develop the technology that will allow him to upload himself to multiple computer sources, allowing him to build more of himself, upgrade his hardware and softwar, as well as appear and disappear at once. Something the cover of EW’s latest issue hints at.
James Spader was cast as the film’s titular villain last year, and though he hasn’t been seen in any of the leaked photos or videos, it’s quite possible that he has already done some mo-cap and voice work for the character. Since the film is just about half-way done, there is a strong chance that Whedon will reveal some Ultron action be it physical or just hearing his voice during Comic-Con next Saturday.
As you can see, Ultron also shares the cover with Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) both of whom are wearing new suits of armor.
