Jupiter Ascending, a wild, swinging juggernaut of a science-fiction film, created by the eclectic Wachowskis, Lana Wachowski and Andy Wachowski, made a strong debut at Comic Con’s Hall H today. Moderated by Chris Hardwick and starring Channing Tatum, who Hardwick had jokingly asked to take of his shirt and do a Magic Mike “cosplay,” asked Tatum questions about the film, in which he said was going to be a crazy, incredible ride indeed.
A trailer was shown for the film, which was a visual feast for the retinas, as the film was equal parts contemporary sci-fi, Kubrickian, shades of Futureworld, and Logan’s Run, and all part original Wachowskis. Colors and action blended into so many different bendings of the genre, scenes fluttered one after the other as hyper editing and actors doing extreme wire work landed in beautiful concert with background matte paintings and exquisite cinematography.
The film, which seems to have the narrative of a small town in a distant future, who seems to have a destiny in a nether region of a galaxy that she seems to learn as the film goes along. Played by Mila Kunis, most of the scenes were her co-star Tatum, who had what suspiciously looked like Vulcan-style ears, and who seems to act as the mentor to the wide-eyed, naïve Kunis.
Looks to be another Wachowskis film that will probably raise more questions with its audience than supplying answers, probably just the way the duo likes it.
Jupiter Ascending opens early next year in theaters, and you can watch the previously released trailers right here if you have not seen them yet.
