Sixx: A.M. Band Photo

Nikki Sixx’s other band (because his talent is just too immense for one band?), Sixx:A.M., has just released the official video for the first single “Gotta Get It Right” from their upcoming third album Modern Vintage.

Watch the video for “Gotta Get it Right” here below as well as a trailer video for the Modern Vintage album.

I’m just going to lay this out there: Motley Crue’s 1981 debut album, Too Fast for Love, was a sleaze punk-metal masterpiece. As the primary songwriter and driving force behind that band, bassist Nikki Sixx pumped out catchy tunes and heavy metal hits for decades now with songs like “Home Sweet Home,” “Kickstart My Heart,” and “Looks That Kill” (even the band’s 1994 eponymous Motley Crue album featuring John Corabi on vocals was vastly underrated). But, with side project Sixx:AM, formed in 2007, Sixx so far hasn’t been able to capture that spark with the masses. With Motley Crue officially retiring next year, it looks like this side project will become the bassist’s main gig.

The hype for this new record comes complete with a press release that is basically a long string of quotes from the band about how they’re breaking new ground by melding the great musicianship and songs that they grew up with to a modern sensibility and blah, blah blah. Read for yourself:

Says bassist Nikki Sixx: “Like our favourite bands from the 1970s, Sixx:A.M. is rooted in songwriting, musicianship and lyrics – three core elements that helped to define that era. Sixx:A.M. has taken even more pages from this book on “Gotta Get It Right” and the rest of Modern Vintage, having hopefully created a record that demands to be discovered again and again.” Vocalist James Michael commented: “On the first two albums, Sixx:AM established a musical freedom that few bands get to enjoy. “Gotta Get It Right” is clearly a birth child of that creative freedom and an exciting next step for us as our goal was to create something which confounds both expectation and categorization”. Adds guitarist DJ Ashba: “Gotta Get it Right” is a great example of how Sixx:AM has set out to celebrate the music that has influenced us over the years and we truly feel we’ve made a genre defying album with Modern Vintage “

Watch the album trailer below for more of a taste of these guys’ overblown sense of self importance.

As for the song, it sounds like a Queen cover band playing a Cheap Trick throwaway. So we’ve got the vintage… where’s the modern? Unless they’re counting on sucking as hard as nearly everything else on modern rock radio, I really don’t see it. The video is equally cliche centering around a young couple playing out their relationship on social media and the band trying hard to divert attention from their lack of a drummer (Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters reportedly played on part of the album).

Modern Vintage will, undoubtedly, be stinking up the bargain bin at your local big box store shortly after its release on October 7th.
