Edge of Tomorrow Movie Review by Adam Frazier

Welcome back to another edition of The Digital Wire. For this week’s roundup of the coolest upcoming Blu-ray and DVD release news, we have a sorely neglected summer sci-fi thrill ride, an epic documentary about one of the world’s greatest heavy metal bands, a Bigfoot movie made by a stand-up comedian, a pair of obscure westerns starring a baby-faced Jack Nicholson, and an Oscar-winning comedy starring Dustin Hoffman in drag.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power.

Edge Of Tomorrow Live Die Repeat Blu-ray

Despite being one of the best movies of the summer and grossing over $360 million worldwide, the high concept, Tom Cruise-starring sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow couldn’t put up much of a fight at the U.S. box office. Doug Liman‘s acclaimed adaptation of the popular manga All You Need Is Kill might reach even more appreciative viewers when it hits Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD on October 7, 2014. A 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack will also be available.

The single disc release will only include the Weapons Of The Future and Creatures Not Of This World featurettes. According to our previous coverage, the film appears to be undergoing a minor title alteration for its video release. That’s a pretty unusual move to make at this juncture, but studio logic, you know? Check out FamousMonster’s review of Edge here.

Willow Creek

Willow Creek, the recent found footage Bigfoot film directed by actor, comedian, and filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait that has received much positive praise, will be making its debut on Blu-ray and DVD on September 9, 2014.

Tootsie

The Criterion Collection just announced its release slate for November and that month they are bringing to Blu-ray some highly in-demand titles. First up is 1982’s Oscar-winning comedy smash Tootsie, directed by the late Sydney Pollack and starring Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, and Bill Murray. In addition to a new 4K digital restoration of the film, the Blu-ray will include a commentary with Pollack, a new interview with comedy writer Phil Rosenthal, vintage and recent making-of documentaries, screen tests, deleted scenes, and more. Tootsie will be available on November 25, 2014.

The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind

Two weeks before Tootsie, Criterion will also release a double shot of late-60’s indie western classics starring a pre-stardom Jack Nicholson, The Shooting/Ride in the Whirlwind. The films were shot back-to-back by acclaimed filmmaker Monte Hellman and have been hailed throughout the years as overlooked masterworks of the genre. Both films were digitally restored in 4K resolution and will include numerous bonus features such as commentaries by Hellman, video interviews with various surviving members of the cast and crew (including assistant director – and future Star Wars producer – Gary Kurtz and co-star Harry Dean Stanton), a new video essay on actor Warren Oates by critic Kim Morgan, and more. The Blu-ray set will be available starting November 11, 2014.

Metallica Some Kind Of Monster

One of the best documentaries of the last decade is finally coming to Blu-ray. Directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky, the team best known for the classic Paradise Lost trilogy, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster provides viewers with a no-holds-barred account of the modern masters of metal music as they struggle to complete their 2003 album St. Anger while dealing with personal and professional difficulties including the search for a replacement bass player and some cringe-inducing group therapy sessions. Extras have yet to be announced but the two-disc DVD released in 2005 packed a sizable array of supplements including filmmaker and band commentaries, deleted scenes, and extended interviews so it’s safe to assume that they will be included on this Blu-ray, which will be available on November 28, 2014.
