Chloe Moretz As Hit Girl In Kick-Ass 2

Chloe Moretz had a few starring gigs before she became a household name thanks to Kick-Ass. Director Matthew Vaughn’s bubble gum pop adaptation of the comic of the same name was a massive cult hit, but it took a few years before we got to see a sequel. As the time it took to get a sequel took longer, Moretz got older, and soon that young Hit-Girl spouting out obscenities would lose its luster. Then came word that Vaughn wouldn’t return to direct Kick-Ass 2. By the time the sequel came out it was panned by critics, and the film was a huge flop at the box office.

Now Moretz is confirming that chances of seeing Kick-Ass 3 are dead, and she blames it on those who pirated the second entry. Hit the jump for more.

Speaking to Digital Spy, Moretz said:

“Sadly, I think I’m done with the character. Hit-Girl was a very cool character, but I don’t think there will be any more movies. You make these movies for the fanboys, but nowadays everyone seems to pirate them rather than watch them in the movie theatre. Kick-Ass 2 was one of the number one pirated movies of the year, but that doesn’t help us because we need box office figures. We need to prove to the distributors that we can make money from a third and a fourth movie – but because it didn’t do so well, we can’t make another one.”

Piracy was only part of Kick-Ass 2‘s problems. A terrible script, a director who didn’t understand the source material like Vaughn did, Moretz getting older and thus Hit Girl’s act lost it luster, and other things led to the movie’s downfall. Star Jim Carrey dropped out of the sequel’s press tour citing the film’s graphic violence in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings.

But Moretz does have a point about the piracy. Piracy can obviously hurt box office numbers. The Expendables 3‘s numbers were hurt due to piracy when an illegal copy of the film hit the web weeks before its release. Lionsgate went on the attack by filing lawsuit paperwork on those who downloaded illegal copies, but the damage was already done. However, like Kick-Ass 2, the film was critically panned. So it really wouldn’t make sense to put the blame on piracy alone.
