The 2014 summer movie season had it share of ups and downs (slightly more of the former than the latter, in terms of quality anyhow) but even the duds usually get another day in court when they depart the theater screens en route to the more pleasant waters of Blu-ray, DVD, and Video-On-Demand. For this week’s edition of The Digital Wire we’ve got a few new release announcements that should be of great interest to you regardless of where your taste in cinema may reside.
Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.
Much like any movie Michael Bay is involved with, this summer’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (read FamousMonster’s review here) made major bank at the box office while simultaneously alienating a huge portion of its core audience. Expect the mindless FX radioactive reptilian excitement to attract a few more converts when the Jonathan Liebesman-directed flick hits Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D combo packs and DVD on December 16, 2014. Bonus features on the combo packs are set to include the following:
Digital Reality
In Your Face! The Turtles in 3D
It Ain’t Easy Being Green
Evolutionary Mash-Up
Turtle Rock
Extended Ending
“Shell Shocked” Music Video
Making of “Shell Shocked”
Speaking of summer blockbusters, Matt Reeves‘ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was one of the season’s precious few bright spots (read FamousMonster’s review here). The critically hailed smash is coming to Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, and DVD on December 2, 2014. The film will also be available as part of the Caesar’s Warrior Collection box set that will also include 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a collectible booklet and ape character cards, and will come packaged in a replica of Caesar’s head. Extra features on the Blu-ray editions have been finalized and will include the following:
Audio Commentary by Matt Reeves
Deleted Scenes with Optional Commentary by Matt Reeves
Journey to Dawn
Andy Serkis: Rediscovering Caesar
Humans and Apes: The Cast of Dawn
The World of Dawn
The Ape Community
Move Like an Ape: An Artist s Artist’s Medium

Shout! Factory recently announced an awesome line-up of new releases on Blu-ray for the first two months of 2015. Extra features have not yet been finalized but we do know that we can expect high-definition discs for the 1970s pulp conspiracy thrillers The Boys from Brazil (January 6, 2015) and Capricorn One (January 13, 2015), Thor director Kenneth Branagh‘s handsome Shakespeare adaptation Henry V (featuring a young Christian Bale among others – January 27, 2015), the French art-house gems Jean De Florette and Manon of the Spring (which will be released together on a double feature Blu – January 27, 2015), the 1981 Oscar-winning drama On Golden Pond (featuring the great Henry Fonda in his final on-screen performance – January 20, 2015), and an individual release for Werner Herzog‘s haunting epic masterpiece Fitzcarraldo (January 13, 2015), which was released in August as part of a box set of Herzog’s best films.
In addition, the company’s sci-fi/horror imprint Scream Factory will release the graphic 1989 version of The Phantom of the Opera (starring horror legend Robert Englund – January 13, 2015), the heavily re-edited sci-fi adventure Supernova (starring James Spader of The Blacklist and The Avengers: Age of Ultron – January 13, 2015), and future Oscar-winner Bill Condon‘s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (January 6, 2015). Scream also has a double feature Blu-ray of the exploitation horror classics Blacula and Scream, Blacula, Scream scheduled for an unspecified February 2015 and will release the violent cult high school thriller Class of 1984 sometime thereafter. Each of these titles should be available for pre-order soon.
