boyhood still ifc films sxsw

This week’s edition of The Digital Wire is positively epic and packed to capacity with major new release announcements. We’ve got some horror, some drama, some more horror, even more horror, action, comic book animation, a 3D documentary starring one of the world’s highest-grossing filmmakers, and finally….horror. Well we are getting pretty close to Halloween and all.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon. We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

Dead Snow 2

Fans of the 2009 horror comedy Dead Snow can rejoice because on December 9, 2014 director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters) is bringing another grue-soaked helping of Nazi zombie mayhem to your home when Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead comes to Blu-ray and DVD from Well Go USA. Extra features on the Blu-ray will include the international cut of the movie, a filmmakers’ audio commentary, VFX featurette, Dead Snow comic book, and the short film ARMEN. The DVD edition will include the theatrical cut and every bonus feature except for the short film.

Justice League: Throne of Atlantis

The latest DC Universe animated feature Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, a direct sequel to the recent Justice League: War, will premiere on Blu-ray and DVD on January 27, 2015. Featuring the voice talents of Rosario Dawson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Astin, and Jerry O’Connell, Throne of Atlantis finds the League coming together to save the world from becoming a large watery grave at the hands of Aquaman’s brother Ocean Master. Extra features will include all-new featurettes focusing on the movie’s villains and music score, a panel discussion from the 2014 NY Comic-Con, a bonus sequence featuring Robin and Nightwing, four bonus cartoons, and a sneak preview of the next DCU animated movie Batman vs. Robin.

The Strain

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment has set a release date of December 2, 2014 for The Strain: The Complete First Season. Adapted from the hugely successful horror novel written by executive producers Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan, the show will be available on both Blu-ray and DVD and include the featurettes “In the Beginning”, “A Novel Approach”, and “Setrakian’s Lair” as supplements.

Boyhood

One of the surprise critical and commercial successes of the summer, Richard Linklater‘s universally adored coming-of-age epic Boyhood now has an official release date of January 6, 2015 on both Blu-ray and DVD. Extras will include the featurette “The 12 Year Project” and a Q&A with director Linklater and the cast.

Frogs

Continuing its quest to release every unavailable horror and sci-fi feature not currently on Blu-ray and DVD, Scream Factory has announced six new titles for early-to-mid 2015. The movies set to be released all come from the killer animal/insect/reptile/aquatic life sub-genre of horror and will include Frogs (starring a young, mustache-less Sam Elliott), the H.G. Wells adaptation Food of the Gods, Empire of the Ants (starring Joan Collins), the killer cobra flick Jaws of Satan, Reptilicus, and the Italian octopus yarn Tentacles (starring John Huston, Shelley Winters, and Henry Fonda). The six movies will be paired up on three double feature discs. You can expect release date and extra feature announcements in the months to come.

The Guest

From the creative talent that brought us the clever home invasion horror You’re Next comes the genre-hopping action-thriller The Guest. Though it’s still playing in limited release here in the States the film already has a Region B Blu-ray release set for December 29, 2014 in the U.K. Extra features have yet to be announced. You can purchase the soundtrack here.

As Above So Below

As Above So Below, a late summer release that performed strongly at the box office, now has a home video release date of December 2, 2014. Set in the ancient catacombs of Paris, the found footage horror film will be available on Blu-ray and DVD from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Extra features are limited to a behind-the-scenes featurette. A Digital HD UltraViolet Digital Copy will also be included.

Intruders

BBC Home Entertainment will release Intruders: Season One on Blu-ray and DVD on December 23, 2014. Rabid fans of the Glen Morgan-created series starring John Simm, Mira Sorvino, and James Frain will flip their proverbial wigs as every episode is set to be presented in 1080p high-definition with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround soundtracks and the set will include a special behind-the-scenes feature containing new interviews with the cast and creative team.

James Cameron Deepsea Challenge 3D

James Cameron doesn’t do what James Cameron does, for James Cameron. James Cameron does what James Cameron does because James Cameron is… James Cameron. And starting November 11, 2014 you can own James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D in your format choice of Blu-ray or DVD, but only the Blu-ray will include the 3D version of the Aliens/Titanic director’s immersive documentary about his solo dive to the depths of the Mariana Trench in a submersible of his own design. Special features have yet to be announced.

Housebound

Our own Adam Frazier recently called the indie horror feature Housebound “a refreshing entry in the haunted house subgenre” (read the rest of his review here). Currently in theaters and streaming online, the film will be coming to Blu-ray and DVD on November 18, 2014 from XLrator Media. The Blu-ray edition will be available exclusively on Amazon. Extra features have yet to be announced.

Lord of Illusions

Clive Barker‘s 1995 mystery-horror cult classic Lord of Illusions has been scheduled for release on Blu-ray on December 16, 2014 by Scream Factory. The release will split two different cuts of the film and a host of new and vintage bonus features over a pair of Blu-ray discs. In addition to the theatrical release version we’re also getting Barker’s preferred director’s cut in a new high-definition transfer. Barker will supply that cut with an audio commentary. The extras are also set to include deleted scenes with commentary by the director, multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes, vintage interviews, original on-set footage, a newly-produced interview with storyboard artist Martin Mercer, and a photo gallery.
