‘Pan’ Gets Pushed Back From Summer To Fall Release

Hugh Jackman and Levi Miller in Pan

There has only been one trailer for Joe Wright‘s Pan. The Peter Pan origins story was expected to open in theaters this summer, which would have put it in direct competition with Marvel’s Ant-Man and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

Now it looks like Warner Bros. doesn’t think the film would fare well against those two films or in the summer movie season in general, as they have rescheduled the movie for a fall release. Hit the jump for more.

Per THR, Pan will be moving from July 24 to a much later October 9 release date. The film will now open alongside Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs biopic Steve Jobs, and it will be sandwiched in between Olympus Has Fallen sequel London Has Fallen, which opens a week before on October 2, and Crimson Peak, Bridge of Spies, and Goosebumps, all of which open a week after on October 16.

On rescheduling the film, studio’s domestic distribution head Dan Fellman said:

“We wanted to give Pan the space to extend its theatrical run, so taking it out of the cluttered summer season made the most sense. Moving the film to the heart of the fall will allow us more time to screen the picture, enabling us to capitalize on what we anticipate will be strong word of mouth.”

The move also allows Warner Bros. to have some breathing room. Of all the studios, they have the most releases this summer, with at least one WB film opening every two weeks, that’s a total of nine films.

Of course with the new release date comes more time to polish some of the visuals. As we’ve seen in the first trailer, the film was heavy on the visual effects, but also popped with an assortment of bright colors.

Director Joe Wright on Pan‘s new release date:

“As you might expect, the fantastical story of Peter Pan involves very complex effects and I did not want to compromise on quality in finishing the film. This allows me and my team the time to complete the movie and tell the story the way it should be told.”

Written by Jason Fuchs (Wonder Woman), Pan stars Hugh Jackman, Levi Miller, Rooney Mara, and Garrett Hedlund.
