Neill Blomkamp's Chappie

This week’s edition of Digital Wire Blu-ray Releases has the news on several upcoming home video debuts bound to be of great interest to sci-fi and horror fans, including the latest from filmmakers Spike Lee and Neill Blomkamp and a few obscure monster movie relics from decades past.

Below you’ll find info on several future home video releases complete with technical specs, release dates, and links to pre-order at Amazon, as well as a list of titles coming out this week.

We would greatly appreciate it if you use those links to order because a small percentage of each order helps keep this website running at max power. The cover art for certain titles has yet to be finalized.

Chappie

If you missed it in theaters (and most of us did), Neill Blomkamp‘s latest grungy sci-fi action flick Chappie will be released on Blu-ray and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on June 16, 2015. The Blu-ray edition will contain the bulk of the bonus features, including:

Alternate Ending

Eight Featurettes:

Blomkamp Limited Edition Collection

The same day Chappie hits stores, Sony will also release the Blomkamp³ Limited Edition Collection Blu-ray set that includes the director’s latest along with his first two features, District 9 and Elysium, along with all of their previously available bonus features as well as some newer features exclusive to this collection.

Wolfen

It had a classy cast, a first-rate director, and some best-selling source material, but Michael Wadleigh‘s (Woodstock) tense urban horror feature Wolfen turned out to be the least of 1981’s triumvirate of werewolf thrillers (the best being An American Werewolf in London and The Howling). The movie has built up a respectable cult following since its original release and now Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will bring it to Blu-ray later this summer as part of their “Warner Archive Collection” of titles available for sale only on online. The only extra will be the original theatrical trailer.

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus

A loose remake of the early 1970’s arthouse horror film Ganja & Hess, Spike Lee‘s Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, which the prolific and controversial filmmaker financed through Kickstarter, is now coming to Blu-ray and DVD from Anchor Bay Home Entertainment on May 26, 2015. No extra features have yet been announced.

Eaten Alive

In 1976, Tobe Hooper, hot off directing the groundbreaking horror masterpiece The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, decided to follow up that surprise worldwide smash hit with the bizarro, psychedelic backwoods slasher flick Eaten Alive, about an unhinged lunatic (Neville Brand) who runs a shady motel where the guests end up diced to ribbons or fed still breathing to the crocodile that lives in the swamp out back. It didn’t achieve the cultural impact of Hooper’s breakthrough film, but Eaten has managed to live on as one of that decade’s sleaziest, weirdest B-movies. Arrow Video will release it on a 2-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack on July 28, 2015 with a bloody helping of bonus features:

Brand new 2K transfer from the original camera negative
High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations
Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearin
Audio commentary with co-writer and producer Mardi Rustam, make-up artist Craig Reardon and stars Roberta Collins, William Finley and Kyle Richards

My Name is Buck: Star Robert Englund discusses his acting career
The Butcher of Elmendorf: The Legend of Joe Ball – The story of the South Texas bar owner on whom Eaten Alive is loosely based
5ive Minutes with Marilyn Burns – The star of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre talks about working on Eaten Alive
The Gator Creator: archival interview with Hooper
