‘Iron Fish’ Trailer: Explore The Ocean’s Depths

Iron Fish

The first teaser trailer has been released for Iron Fish, an upcoming video game from BeefJack and Dean Edwards that’s described as a “psychological deep-sea thriller.”

The game sees you exploring the deepest parts of the ocean, a place where few humans have ever explored before and where you’ll encounter a variety of creatures, as you make discoveries and seek answers.

ABOUT THE GAME

What will a simple mayday call bring to the surface?

Iron Fish is a psychological deep-sea thriller that challenges players to navigate the dangers that lurk at the bottom of the ocean, where humans no longer have the upper hand.

Discover what lies forgotten in the abyss. Play as Cerys, a deep sea investigator for an elite British Naval group, and use her state-of-the-art, government-funded equipment to submerge as far as we can go. But seven miles under the surface is dangerous territory for humans, especially when only five per cent of Earth’s oceans have been explored so far.

Cerys’s missions will lead the player to uncover mysteries of the deep and survive its harsh and perilous environment. Come face to face with creatures that have never seen the light of day, question what is science or myth, and solve the unanswered questions of Cerys’s past.

A developer diary was also released sharing what inspired Edwards to make the game:

Even from a very young age, I knew I wanted to be a game designer. I began playing games on various consoles at an early age, with all the classics of the early ’90s: Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, and Crash Bandicoot.

The game that solidified my career choice is one that I was (and still am) obsessed with, Pok̩mon Рprobably a little surprising, considering Iron Fish is a psychological thriller. While I loved discovering all sorts of new, intriguing creatures within the game, there was always one type of Pok̩mon I was particularly interested in: water Pok̩mon. Not only was Pok̩mon my childhood obsession, but also my earliest inspiration for Iron Fish.

Growing up, I became inspired by things outside of games. I enjoyed watching many horror films over the years, from older classics like the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th series, to the likes of Paranormal Activity more recently – but more on these in later blogs. I will say, though, that watching such a diverse range of horror films has inspired me in a lot of different ways. Particularly, they taught me that games and films don’t have to be full of blood and gore to be absolutely terrifying. This is a lesson I will be bringing to Iron Fish.

There are tamer inspirations too, though. I have been fascinated by many nature and wildlife documentaries over the years. The BBC’s The Blue Planet is wonderful. I watched it religiously and was captivated by the array of marine life and their amazing abilities that allow them to live so far out in vast oceans. One creature that caught my attention from the series was the angler fish, with its bioluminescent lure for attracting prey.

There was one documentary, however, that really captivated me. It was an episode of the BBC’s Natural World, where the marvellous giant squid was filmed in the wild for the first time. I was just as blown away by the technology used to film so deep in the ocean as I was by the animal. The submarine was quite small, and it used an infrared light which would be invisible to the animals so to not disturb them. Of course, the sheer size of the giant squid was something to behold. That was the point that properly made me think “˜this would be a really cool game.’ There’s something about that atmosphere, and those creatures which have evolved so innovatively that really capture our sense of awe.

It’s a cliché, but Iron Fish is the game I have always wanted to create. I’m having the time of my life working on it and I can’t wait to share it with everyone later this year.

At the moment the game is only planned for release on PC, Mac, and Linux platforms, so anyone hoping to play on a console appears to be out of luck. It’s expected to be released later this year.
