“To take revenge halfheartedly is to court disaster; either condemn or crown your hatred.” – Pierre Corneille
Big Man surely doesn’t take his revenge halfheartedly. If anything, the titular character in Big Man Plans #3 fully embraces the latter part of the above quote from the 17th century French tragedian, crowning his personal revenge king. Written by Eric Powell and Tim Wiesch, Big Man — the tortured and vicious antihero — continues enacting his brutal plans against those who’ve wronged him and the ones he’s loved.
Big Man Plans #3 is undoubtedly a dark, savage, and gritty issue — it’s also the best installment, both in terms of writing and art, in what is certainly one of the most fascinating series out right now. Powell and Wiesch have developed a character with such depth, whose backstory is filled with more turmoil and grief than anyone should ever have to endure, that it is impossible not to root for him — even when he’s ripping off people’s faces.
While it’s still not entirely clear what finally makes Big Man reach his breaking point (though it has been hinted at for the past three issues), in a way, it doesn’t even matter. The flashbacks from his childhood and his time in Vietnam that show the abuse he had to endure, are almost enough to excuse the moral depravity of his actions.
Powell’s illustrations are simply fantastic. His best panels are those which highlight facial expressions, because the faces of each character tell brilliant stories even when words are nowhere to be found.
For the penultimate issue of an incredibly layered mini-series, Big Man Plans #3 is a superb addition. At times, I had to pull my eyes from the page due to some intensely graphic images, but the story is so compelling, and so human, that I couldn’t help but continue on. While this is definitely not a book for younger audiences, Big Man Plans should certainly be a part of your plans in the near future.
