“Where there’s war, there’s udder destruction…”

Now that is a quote.

World War Moo: An Apocalypse Cow Novel by Michael Logan is the follow-up to Apocalypse Cow, bringing back some favorite characters from the original, now that the zombie virus infecting the cows has spread to mankind. It IS contained in great Britain for now. What will the people of Britain do? What will the people of the world do? The infected are just like any other person – just with super-sized tempers. They are just normal, regular people who like a little brawl now and again, or every day. It is only when they get near the uninfected, that they really rage out. The leaders in the outside world want to nuke Britain to stamp out the spread of the virus. The people of Britain want to escape.

When given this book to review, I was apprehensive at the title, World War Moo, as well as the title of its predecessor,Apocalypse Cow (that I had to quickly read, so I could give this one a fair shake). I thought it was going to be something utterly ridiculous and nonsensical, and was prepared to look at it through that lens (I am a fair reviewer), kind of like Zombeavers. And it is ridiculous, but in a witty, British way. Yes, there are still zombie cows and zombie squirrels, and all sorts of zombie animals. But it is a new twist on the genre. These people are not undead. They are infected with the virus. It makes them easily angered and prone to violent rabid fighting, but it can be controlled. That rage is nearly impossible to control when one sniffs out (or uses other senses) the uninfected.

It is cleverly written, yet also clear that the author had fun with it, which is what one hopes for an author and his/her readers. This fun does not take away from the stark Dystopian British plight trapped inside the world as we know it, moving on without them.

St. Martin’s Griffin press release:

It began with a cow that just wouldn’t die. Yep. That’s right. They’re still un-dead, and now the disease has spread to humans. The epidemic that transformed Britain’s bovine population into a blood-thirsty, brain-grazing, zombie horde…err…zombie herd… is threatening to take over the globe in Michael Logan’s World War Moo.

And there’s not much time left to stop it. All of Great Britain is infected and hungry. The rest of the world has a tough choice to make. Should they nuke the brits right off the map — men, women, children, cows and all — in the biggest genocide in history? Or should they risk global infection in a race against time to find a cure? With hungry zombies attempting to cross borders by plains, trains, boats, and any other form of transport available, it’s only a matter of time before the virus gets out.

And if it does, there’s only one answer. This means war.
