Barb Wire #1 brings one of Dark Horse Comics’ original successes to publication for the first time in years, and what a return it is! This book is the same great comic that I remember reading almost 20 years ago.

Series creator Chris Warner returns to write the series, and he hasn’t missed a step with this debut issue. It’s got all the biting, satirical jabs at modern-day society that were a hallmark of the original series. Besides featuring a really solid story, Warner sneaks in some laugh-out-loud moments that are truly great. Underneath these moments are opportunities to actually stop and THINK about the message that Warner is sending, hopefully the message will get through to its intended audience. Now, don’t worry about this being a “preachy” social commentary comic, because it works on two different levels. The other level is that of a really entertaining, kick-butt story that’s loaded with action and fun, that also has some surprising twists and turns.

Artist Patrick Olliffe is one of my favorites. He’s been all around the comic book universe(s), and still turns out some pretty fantastic work. This book is no exception. He brings a whole new look and feel to Steel Harbor and The Hammerhead, yet it’s still familiar. All the returning characters are immediately recognizable, and all of the new characters look great and like they belong in Steel Harbor. I can’t write this review without mentioning the fantastic work that inker Tom Nguyen does in this issue. Simply put, without him, the artwork wouldn’t look as awesome as it does.

If you’re thinking this is just another “bad girl” book, don’t worry. That era is pretty much over. Sure, there’s still some comics lurking about out there, but this is NOT one of them. This is a great story about a woman who owns a bar that gets routinely trashed (the bar, not the woman), and who’s a bounty hunter on the side. This is a straight-up great comic book, and whether you’re familiar with the comic or not, you’re going to love it!
