The Star Wars Anthology films are meant to act as a narrative that doesn’t focus or have Jedi. Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One is the first of two that will be released in the coming years, and will center on the Rebel Alliance stealing the plans of the Death Star. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film still star Felicity Jones as the female lead, with Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises, The Place Beyond the Pines), Riz Ahmed (Four Lions, Nightcrawler), Diego Luna (Godzilla, Monsters), and Forest Whitaker (Taken 3, The Butler) to provide supporting roles.
While it was first thought that there won’t be any Jedi or Sith in these films, it appears that isn’t so much the case, as it is being reported that Darth Vader will appear in Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One. More below.
Birth. Death. Movies was the first to report on the news. Now, it should be noted that Darth Vader is not the main antagonist of the film, as reports are saying that will go to Mendelsohn.
The site confirms that Vader will appear on screen, so “no shadowy presence” or “don’t blink or you’ll miss it scene.” How the Dark Lord of the Site will appear is still unknown, but it is said that it could range from a hologram, viewscreen, or something else entirely. It is also unconfirmed as to whether the Rebel Forces will run into Vader.
James Earl Jones recently reprised his voice role as Darth Vader for a short scene in season one of Star Wars Rebels, and will do so again for a significant portion of season two. It stands to reason that he will be approached for Rogue One. Since the film takes place in between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, it only makes sense that Darth Vader has a role in Rogue One.
Here’s what we know about the film so far,
A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy in the Star Wars Anthology film, Rogue One.
The second of these Star Wars Anthology films is said to center on Boba Fett, but that has yet to be confirmed. Disney and LucasFilms are currently looking for a director for the film, a position that was previously filled by Josh Trank before he was reportedly “let go.”
Though this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con panel is said to focus on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gareth Edwards make a small appearance either in person or via video to share just a little more on the film before it starts production. Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One will hit theaters on December 16, 2016.
