“God forgives, the Brotherhood doesn’t.”

Point Break, Lionheart, The Last Boy Scout, Double Impact – 1991 was a hell of a year for action movies. Joining those immortal classics is Craig R. Baxley‘s Stone Cold, starring former Seattle Seahawks linebacker Brian Bosworth.

“The Boz” plays Joe Huff, a bad-ass Alabama cop with his own brand of justice. While on suspension for insubordination, Joe is recruited by the FBI to go undercover and infiltrate a Mississippi white supremacist biker gang known as The Brotherhood. Gaining the trust of The Brotherhood’s barbaric leader, Chains Cooper (Lance Henriksen, Aliens), won’t be easy. But Joe Huff doesn’t do “easy.”

Undercover as “John Stone,” Joe is tasked with killing a man as his initiation into the gang. With the help of his FBI contact, Lance (Sam McMurray), Joe is able to fake the murder and join The Brotherhood. Chains’ right-hand man, Ice (William Forsythe, The Devil’s Rejects), is suspicious of Stone and formulates a plan to expose him.

Stone Cold is one of those Movies, For Guys Who Like Movies™ I saw a half-dozen times on television in the ’90s. It’s Easy Rider meets Point Break, an epic of denim and leather, with more mullets than a Kentucky Headhunters concert. There’s also a pretty incredible scene where “The Boz” has a heart-to-heart with a monitor lizard.

This is a knock-down, drag-out brawl of a movie. The amount of violence in Baxley’s film is truly impressive. At one point, Henriksen storms the Supreme Court and mows down the Mississippi District Attorney and a bunch of Supreme Court Justices with machine gun fire. There’s also a glorious sequence in which a semi-truck carrying a hundred gallons of meth crashes into a gas station and goes boom.

Directed by Baxley (Dark Angel, Action Jackson) from a screenplay by Walter Doniger Stone Cold is now available on Blu-ray from Olive Films. In terms of presentation, the film’s 1080p transfer is good, but far from definitive. Likewise, the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 lossless soundtrack is sufficient but the lack of a subwoofer channel limits the sound of explosions and gunfire. Another disappointing aspect of this release is the lack of bonus materials. The Stone Cold Blu-ray edition offers no additional content – the main menu only provides selections for “Play” and “Chapters.” Bummer.

Despite the lack of extras, Stone Cold offers up some solid audio and video and is worth a look for die-heard action aficionados. Perfect for a Movies, For Guys Who Like Movies™ marathon or a bad movie night, Stone Cold is “The Boz” at his most bad-ass and Lance Henriksen at his most sadistic. This movie is so pumped with ’90s masculinity it should come with a Gold’s Gym tanktop and Zubaz pants.
