Production is currently underway for the first Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Set 70s years before the events of Harry Potter, in the 1920s, Eddie Redmayne stars as Newt Scamander, the wizarding magizoologist who is in New York documenting numerous magical creatures. His discoveries would eventually become “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” a textbook that would be used as required reading in the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Now, the spinoff has just added Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy) to the cast as a goblin. More on the role in the report below.
THR was the first to report on the news, but could not confirm if the actor was going to aid Redmayne or be a villain. However, they can confirm that he is playing a goblin, so we know there is the inevitability of some makeup work. It wouldn’t be the first time we saw Perlman transform himself for a role. He did it twice for the two Hellboy films, and for the Beauty and the Beast 1980s TV series of the same name. But there is also a chance that the new film could use CGI make-up effects. So I’m sure there will be a deeper appreciation for the film if they didin’t go the CGI makeup route. We’ll just have to see.
In addition to Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy, and Beauty and the Beast, Perlman has also starred in Pacific Rim, Blade II, and can be seen on Amazon’s Hand Of God and Roland Emmerich’s civil rights drama Stonewall.
Perlman joins Katherine Waterston and Alison Sudol as witching sisters Tina and Queenie; Ezra Miller as a wizard named Credence, who is rumored to have a magical connection to Newt; Dan Fogler as a Muggle named Jacob; Colin Farrell as Graves, and Samantha Morton as Mary Lou. The film recently added Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, and Gemma Chan to the cast, although the roles of this trio is still unknown.
David Heyman, Steve Kloves, who wrote seven out of the eight Potter movies, and Lionel Wigram, will produce.
The film is written by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, who makes her screenwriting debut. David Yates (who directed the last five Harry Potter canon films) returns to the franchise to direct. It is rumored that if the new movie is a hit, there is a chance for sequels and maybe even a trilogy based on Fantastic Beasts.
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is set for release on November 18, 2016. We’ll keep you posted as new developments come in.
