Last season, Supernatural ended with the Impala containing everyone’s favorite hunters, Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles), engulfed in rolling darkness. Oh, and the boys caused it. Dean killed Death (the ever enjoyable Julian Richings), in the ultimate fakeout. He was supposed to kill Sam and live in another plane of existence, in order to be rid of the Mark of Cain. Releasing the mark released the darkness, giving us the “big bad” of season 11. We all knew Dean would never kill Sam, after all the sacrificing and saving he has done for all these seasons. But what is a world without death. Is Dean death? Does someone step up?

I guess we will see. Spoilers if you have not watched the premiere!

Supernatural 11.1 “Out of the Darkness, Into the Fire” review: Veiny necks, demon babies, Sam in trouble – again. The end. Just kidding… kinda. It’s true. The Winchesters do fall into a pattern each season: danger to mankind, one of them dying, one does anything to save their brother 1st, mankind 2nd. But why mess with a proven formula? Supernatural is in its 11th season, very rare for this genre.

This episode is a giant mystery. The darkness is a girl (of course she is), and digs Dean (of course she does). The world is weird after the darkness clears. Rabid people with black veins on their necks are attacking humans. The veiny people drop dead soon after, but their blood is contagious. Sam and Dean find an uninfected (very pretty) deputy, and a father (infected) and his newborn hiding in a closet. The father gives the baby to the deputy and goes away.

Cue- brothers bickering. Dean wants to save the baby and kill everything. Sam wants them to try a different approach. Considering their track record, I’d say that was a sensible plan. But it’s Sam, and things don’t usually work out for him.

He gets attacked by a veiny person and is contaminated. So if unchecked, he will be dead in a couple of hours. Oh Sam… you and your deathly experiences.

Dean no longer has the mark, but we know where the mark is. How long will it take them to figure it out?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we see that Crowley didn’t die. His sexy red smoke escaped into a menopausal orgy-loving wife. He YOLOs and then kills them, amidst hot flashes. His minions help him back to his body. I am so glad he’s still Crowley. I know nobody really dies on Supernatural, but I still haven’t forgiven them for Bobby (Jim Beaver). Hell, I stil haven’t forgiven them for John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

Castiel is still running around crazy-eyed. He prays to his brothers in heaven to help him. They show up, but I think torture is on the menu.

The most exciting part of this episode was when the demons reported to Crowley that Michael and Lucifer were rattling around in their cages. I would LOVE to see Mark Pellegrino’s return.

Supernatural airs Wednesday nights at 9pm ET on The CW.

The CW synopsis:

“SUPERNATURAL”

Wednesdays (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET) on The CW

The thrilling and terrifying journey of the Winchester brothers continues as SUPERNATURAL enters its eleventh season. Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) have spent their lives on the road, battling every kind of supernatural threat. Over the years, after countless bloody adventures, they have faced everything from the yellow-eyed demon that killed their mother to vampires, ghosts, shapeshifters, angels and fallen gods. With the help of allies “” both human and supernatural “” they’ve discovered that every victory comes with a price.

In the show’s tenth season, the Winchester brothers faced their most personal threat yet. The all-powerful Mark of Cain threatened to consume Dean, turning him into one of the monsters he has spent his life hunting. Meanwhile, a formidable witch, Rowena (Ruth Connell), rose to power to claim her position at the right hand of the King of Hell, Crowley (Mark Sheppard). Once Rowena revealed herself to be Crowley’s mother, the King was forced to choose between his family and the Winchesters. All while Sam, with the help of Castiel (Misha Collins), Crowley, and some unlikely allies, waged a desperate battle to save Dean from the Mark of Cain.

Sam struck a dangerous deal with Rowena – she would cast a spell to remove the Mark from Dean, but in exchange for the Book of the Damned. And removing the Mark releases The Darkness, an unstoppable evil force that was locked away by God. Rowena’s spell works, and Dean is free from the Mark of Cain, but now The Darkness is free as well. And the Winchesters now must face the most powerful danger they have ever known, one that even God could not destroy.

SUPERNATURAL is from Warner Bros. Television in association with Wonderland Sound and Vision, with executive producers Jeremy Carver (“Being Human”) and Phil Sgriccia, and executive consultant Robert Singer (“Midnight Caller”).
