Firefly NYCC Panel 1

Years after its cancellation, Firefly is still very much alive. To the delight of fans of the cult hit, New York Comic-Con held a Firefly Reunion panel on Saturday, October 10th. Believe it or not, it’s been 10 years since the release of the show’s companion film, Serenity. Stars Gina Torres, Nathan Fillion, and Jewel Staite were all scheduled to grace the stage for the Q&A, and all three arrived, with the addition of surprise guest Alan Tudyk!

Although Tudyk needed to meet Amy Acker to work on ADR (additional dialogue recorded) for their show, Con Man, he was able to stay for the first 20 minutes of the panel. He thrilled the crowd early on by announcing that “everyone on the stage here is in this season of Con Man.” In fact, viewers can see both Torres and Staite on the show this Wednesday, October 14th.

Beyond discussing projects the cast members are involved in (Fillion in Castle, Fillion and Torres as voice actors in the video game Destiny, and Staite in How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town), the actors reminisced about their favorite memories on the Firefly set.

Torres remembered what she called a “sweet” moment with Tudyk on the filming day for their characters’ (Zoe and Wash) love scene. She explained how these scenes can be awkward because there are “tons of people” and it’s cold, but as they prepared, the rest of the cast and crew was still filming another scene elsewhere. “So we just sort of got into bed and spooned and hung out,” Torres said. Tudyk joked, “Take me back. Take me back,” but then challenged Torres’ version of events. “This is how I remember it. I got in the bed and thought I would sleep here. I heard Gina come in and say, ‘Damnit!’ because we had the same idea, and then she said, ‘I’m gonna get in too. You [Gina] got in there, and there was a moment of silence and then you said, ‘Well, get over here!” Staite then quipped, “Sean [Maher] and I used to get into the beds too, but it was different. We would be like, ‘Let’s sing Whitney Houston!’ He’s really good!”

In a notable moment, a fan asked Fillion: “Malcolm Reynolds and Han Solo walk into a bar. Who walks out?” Fillion responded, “Everybody else.”

In response to the $3 million raised on Indiegogo for Con Man (see our panel coverage for that series), Torres and Fillion expressed gratitude to the fans and emphasized the power of fan support. Fillion also gushed about how meeting fans at conventions is “like Christmas.” In regards to the surprising popularity of Firefly, Staite added to great applause, “If the network tells you people aren’t watching the show, sometimes they’re wrong.”

Finally, and perhaps most exciting of all, could there by a live comic book reading by the Firefly cast in the future? After Staite explained that although she loves the comics, it’s a little sad because “it’s like reading a script that you don’t get to perform.” Fillion then suggested they all go to his house, dress up, and act out the comics. Now, this may have been just a flippant and humorous remark, but the fans seem to really want it! With the level of fan engagement on social media, even a YouTube series of these live readings would be sure to garner attention.

  1. Con Man was funded on Indiegogo not Kickstater.

  2. It sounded like they said Kickstarter at the panel, but you are correct. It was funded through Indiegogo. We’ve updated the article with this information. Thank you!

  3. Oh okay. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did, I think Kickstarter won the honors of being the Kleenex of crowd funding. :)
