It’s been a few weeks since Ash (Bruce Campbell)tried to impress a hot bar chick, by reading from the book of the dead, while high out of his mind. Since then, he and two of his former coworkers have been doused with gallons of blood, while trying to clean up his mess.

And now it’s time for another crazy episode of Ash vs Evil Dead! Do not proceed if you haven’t watched yet, because… Spoilers!!

Ash’s genius plan to summon a demon from the Necronomicon just for information on how to send all the evil back met with… mixed results. The owner of Books From Beyond was unceremoniusly killed with flying glass and left a deadite. Ash was barely able to escape thanks to his new group, The Ghostbeaters (not quite). Pablo (Ray Santiago) and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) have now come to Ash’s aid, almost as much as he’s bailed them out over the course of the show’s first month.

Agent Fisher (Jill Marie Jones) was left cuffed in the store facing the deadite owner. While she thinks Ash is behind this; justifyably so, she now witnessed the deadites for the second time, and has to be coming around to the idea that something much more sinister is behind all this. Ash and his gang are off to find Pablo’s “Brujo”, his estranged uncle, who is also a Shaman…

As expected, Ruby (Lucy Lawless) shows up right on time to save Fisher.

“Who are you?”

“I’m your new best friend.”

Ruby is the daughter of the archaelogoist who first read from the book way back in the original film. She’s been hunting Ash for 30 years for killing her family and causing this mess, and now she has a partner. Meanwhile out of the woods, the Evil Dead hunt down Ash, threatening to do damage to the Delta, when they barely get to Pablo’s Brujo’s ranch. It’s protected from the evil thanks to its own weird magic… I mean severed heads and animal bones scattered around might even spook demons. It’s like the Sawyer House from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). They meet Brujo (Hemky Madera), who is of course skeptical of his nephew showing up with wise-cracking Ash. Kelly is hearing voices (demonic or mystical, we don’t yet know).

Brujo and Ash go off to conference in a ritual involving the grinding up of maggots, “You making dinner there muchacho?” Ash asks.

“Many underestimate you don’t they?” – Brujo

“At first yeah, but they either end up in my bed or dead” – Ash

He gives Ash some Shaman-based acid to open Ash’s mind. And after a few minutes, Ash’s mind goes bonkers… complete with flashes of 60s/70s TV shows like Bewitched and Charlie’s Angels, and cuts from the original film of The Evil Dead, possessing his girlfriend Linda, and him having to behead and bury her, and of course, there’s Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again,” and tons of scantily clad women… until… he wakes up, eyes sewn shut, in an open grave surrounded by ghosts and monsters, in what I have to admit is a freaky scene.

“Ash, stop being a bitch and be a Jefe!” is the advice Brujo gives him.

Ash’s trip brings him to his happy place, Jacksonville Florida… because why not? It’s interrupted by the demon freed from the Necronomicon in last week’s show, and the brawl is on. The problem is the demon is controlling Kelly. We end with Ash knocked out by Pablo, and a possessed Kelly hiding in plain sight. Ruby and Fisher are in hot pursuit and they have a secret weapon… Ash’s actual undead hand!!!

This episode was like all three Evil Dead films rolled into one. There were some really creepy moments, lots of slapstick, hilariously bad dialogue, and of course demons messing with Ash. Campbell and crew keep everything moving along quickly, and with each episode at only a half hour, there’s never time for anything to overstay its welcome. It remains my favorite new show on television.

Ash vs Evil Dead returns next Saturday night at 9:00pm ET on Starz.
