Michael Bay Confirms Krang In ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2’

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows

While the most recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film wasn’t well received by film critics, it was still a big hit with audiences, and a lot closer to the ’80s cartoon then the first trilogy. the sequel, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, will introduce the hockey mask wearing vigilante Casey Jones (Stephen Amell), the nefarious scientist Baxter Stockman (Tyler Perry) and the Shredder’s (Brian Tee) dim-witted mutant henchman Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (WWE’s Sheamus).

But the new characters don’t stop there. Producer Michael Bay has one more character to confirm for the sequel, and it is most definitely a fan-favorite. According to the producer, Krang, the living brain who hails from Dimension X will make an appearance. More on the story below.

In the same Rolling Stone interview where the director revealed that Transformers 5 would be the last time he would direct a film from that franchise, Bay revealed that not only would Krang appear, there would also be some changes to the character’s physical appearance:

“They start with Ninja Turtles animation. Pablo Helman, a visual-effects supervisor who worked on the Star Wars prequels, appears onscreen and shows Bay the latest version of Krang, a new-to-the-movies villain who is, essentially, a disembodied brain inside a giant robot. “˜So we’ve eliminated the tentacles,’ Helman explains. “˜Is it too monster-ish?’

“˜He could have some tentacles,’ says Bay. “˜I just don’t want them coming out of the side. He looks like a stupid octopus.'”

Changes just come with the territory – although I am actually happy with how faithful they stayed with the look of Bebop and Rocksteady. But here is just a visual look at Krang from the ’80s cartoon to give you an idea of what to expect in Out of the Shadows.

Krang TMNT

Now Helman mentions that the tentacles have been “eliminated.” So basically it will be just a giant brain in the lower abdomen. The look of the robot that holds Krang will probably undergo some changes as well. But will it be faithful to the cartoon or will it have more of a menacing technological feel? That remains to be seen.

In the cartoon, Krang was actually a warlord from Dimension X, who was banished to Earth, where he aligned himself with the Shredder. Together, they hatched their plans for world domination, which would often be foiled by the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

When inside the body, Krang can manipulate the size as well as shapeshift its hands and arms into weapons or a large pair of wings. In the video games, Krang’s body has been known to self-destruct upon defeat, but Krang would somehow survive the explosion. When outside of the body, Krang would sit on a walking machine, which did not allow him the freedom of movement that he would have inside his body.

This news is no big shock. Back in 2014 some concept art was shared (and later removed) showing what Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady might have looked like if used in the first movie, so all of them appearing in the sequel seemed likely.

With all the good news for fans, will the Technodrome be the next thing to be confirmed? We’ll be sure to keep you posted if it is.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows arrives in theaters on June 3rd.
