The Flash

It was only a matter of time before Warner Bros. found a new someone to replace Seth Grahame-Smith as director of The Flash, starring Ezra Miller. The two parted ways due to creative differences but some say it was his inexperience directing films. Handing off a blockbuster film to a first-time director would have been too risky.

And now there are new reports that the studio has settled on Dope director Rick Famuyiwa to helm the film about the Scarlet Speedster of Central City. More on the story below.

Entertainment Weekly was the first to break the news about the hiring, which comes after WB did a major job overhaul in recent weeks. Apparently, Batman v Superman‘s disappointing performance forced WB’s hand as the studio “decided to take a closer look at who was in charge of each upcoming film.”

Famuyiwa is a veteran director but hasn’t been behind the camera of a big budget film. Previous films include The Wood, Brown Sugar, Our Family Wedding, and most recently HBO’s Confirmation. The Flash will be the director’s first big budget film. The Lego Movie‘s Phil Lord and Chris Miller had written an early draft, which was to be polished by Grahame-Smith, but it is not clear if his work will still be used. It was thought that Lord and Miller would direct the film before they jumped aboard to direct the untitled Han Solo spinoff starring Alden Ehrenreich.

Hiring a relative unknown to direct a big budget film is not entirely uncommon. Marvel Studio uses that same practice on some of their films. While I wasn’t a huge fan of Dope, Famuyiwa is someone who should be able to bring a different kind of energy that Grahame-Smith wasn’t able to. The film was a critical darling when it was screened at the Sundance Film Festival and was praised for being witty and entertaining. So it should be interesting to see what kind of an impact he makes.

We will get to see Miller reprise The Flash next year when he joins Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Cyborg in Justice League: Part One next year. His official solo film is still scheduled for a March 16, 2018 release.
