Last week on Preacher, Jesse (Dominic Cooper) made his stand against Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley) and his cult-like acolytes of QM&P. After keeping them away from his family church and dealing with the nagging ghost of Eugene (Ian Colletti), he got knocked out by Donnie (Derek Wilson), who was able to withstand the pull of Genesis by shooting out his own eardrums. Jesse made one last deal with Quincannon: he gets to keep the church IF”¦ he brings God to Annville next Sunday! Can Jesse follow through on his bold and crazy guarantee, or will he be forced to denounce the Lord in front of everyone while Odin turns his church into a new meatpacking factory complete with a food court?

Spoilers below if you have not seen this week’s Preacher:

We open in Ratwater where the cowboy (Graham Mctavish) walks into the saloon and interrupts an Asian man singing a song. A preacher (Justice Leak) calls him out for being the “Butcher of Gettysburg” and offers him forgiveness if he opens his heart to Jesus. “I love my horse, I love my wife, and I love my little girl. And as far as Jesus, he can join us all in Hell.” He commands the Asian man to finish the song, before slaughtering everyone in the saloon”¦ everyone, including the women, children, gunslingers, prostitutes, the piano player, and finally beheading the Asian. The storm is indeed coming.

Fiore and DeBlanc (Tom Brooke & Anatol Yusef) go to a travel agency looking to book a trip to “down south” aka to Hell. Tulip (Ruth Negga) calls Emily (Lucy Griffith) to help with Cassidy, who is not healing from his “sunburn.” “Do you freak out a lot Emily, because you look like you freak out a lot?” Tulip asks before telling her that Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) is a vampire. Tulip’s been feeding him live pets. She leaves Emily in charge while she heads out “to kill a man in Albuquerque.” Jesse, meanwhile, is under arrest, until he leaps out of the Sheriff’s car and disappears.

You know things are bad for Emily when she’s trying to convince Tulip that Mayor Person (Ricky Mabe) is “really cool” while taking life tips from Norman Bates (she’s watching Psycho in TV). Soon she puts in a distress call to her cool as cats boyfriend, only to feed him to Cassidy”¦ well there’s a giant step over the deep end. When Jesse shows up looking for Tulip, Emily hurries only telling him, “Your mate’s inside.” Jesse knows this means confronting Cassidy for the first time since Cass revealed his truth in all its fiery glory. Great facial expressions from Dominic Cooper in this scene.

Cassidy and Jesse make amends, they have both now seen the worst of each other. “I’m sorry I let you burn,” Jesse tell Cassidy, who responds, “You put me out, that’s all that matters.” Cassidy stole the angels direct line to Heaven. Jesse says they need angel hands to work the phone, and Cassidy responds quickly with “I can get you angels hands.” Another great facial expression from Preacher. Jesse calls Tulip and confesses he still wants her. She doesn’t pick up, she’s busy in Albuquerque where she’s got Carlos strapped to a chair preparing to dish out justice with a meat tenderizer and some other tools she has laid out.

We watch as the cowboy relives his mistake of going back to the saloon instead of heading straight home with medicine for his sick daughter over and over and over”¦ Where do you relive the worst parts of your life over and over, yep, Ratwater is Hell. Soon after yet another round of slaughter he is visited by Fiore and DeBlanc with a proposition. They can get him out of his repetitive torture”¦ if he kills them a preacher.

This was a fantastic penultimate episode. My mouth is watering for next week’s finale! Dominic Cooper stole the show with facial expressions only, and Cassidy is back. It seems like the unholy trio of Jesse, Cassidy and Tulip will be back in full effect right as Jesse is about to welcome God himself into Annville. Odin Quincannon and his meat packing cult are ready and willing to cause some serious problems, not too mention a legitimate Cowboy from Hell is coming for him. I am counting the minutes till next Sunday night!

Preacher’s Season 1 finale is Sunday, July 31, 2016 at 9:00pm on AMC.
