Rogue One A Star Wars Story Empire header

Sometimes one man’s controversy is another man’s $5 million paycheck. At least for Tony Gilroy. As you may recall, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was embroiled in a lengthy controversy when the film entered a summer-long reshoot session that required the aid of Gilroy doing rewrites for the film. Normally, a reshoot for any film, especially one of this size, is not really a cause for concern, but because Disney and Lucasfilm were not pleased with the film’s tone, and that a rumored 40% of the film needed to be reshot in order to address some of its major issues, like tone.

Now that the reshoots are fully behind us and Rogue One is already having its press tour, we can look forward to seeing if these reshoots helped or hurt the first Star Wars spinoff. Regardless of what happens, though, Gilroy is getting a nice paycheck out of all of this. One that amounts to $5 million. More on the story below.

According to THR’s sources, the Michael Clayton director was brought in to help polish the Rogue One script, which was said to have issues with its tone, dialogue, and certain scenes. Based on the report, he would be paid up to $200,000 a week, which may be normal for some writers. Originally, these reshoots were supposed to take up to five weeks, but the scribe worked alongside director Gareth Edwards from July until the fall. Gilroy also gained more editing responsibility with Edwards still providing input. The two had already worked together on Godzilla, so they already had a working relationship established. In the end, that amounted to a grand total of $5 million. When you look at the costs of hiring Gilroy, it is nothing compared to what Disney paid George Lucas for Star Wars. As a friendly reminder, Disney acquired Lucasfilm for the bargain price of $4 billion.

Here’s the official plot synopsis:

From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire’s ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, with Jiang Wen and Forest Whitaker. It opens in theaters on December 16, 2016.
