Baywatch

The fact that Seth Gordon is behind the lens for Baywatch pretty much tells us that the film reboot will go for a more comedic slant than its cheesy drama TV counterpart. And the first trailer for the film pretty much proves that.

Paramount has released the first trailer for Baywatch, starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra, Jon Bass, Rob Huebel, and Hannibal Buress. Clearly, the reboot wants to be something else or at least mimic what made the 21 Jump Street films so successful. Find out if it meets your expectations by watching the trailer below.

In all honesty, I had no interest in a Baywatch film. I wasn’t even remotely interested in the TV show. But considering that there is a promising cast who have both the action and comedic chops, there was potential. One thing is for sure, the boobs and balls joke ratio might not match up with the lifesaving one. We’ll just have to wait and see.

The trailer itself doesn’t go beyond introducing the heroes of the beach, which apparently needs brand restoration. Where have we seen that before? So they hire a gold medal Olympian Matt Brody (Efron) to help in that effort, much to the dismay of Mitch Buchannon (Johnson). The two make an odd pairing at first, but then realize they must put their massive egos aside for the greater good. Where have we seen that before.

It’s not that the film doesn’t use an original premise, but the film may be selling itself short by trying to emulate the 21 Jump Street formula. What works for that film may not necessarily work for Baywatch. Or maybe it can, this is barely a two-minute trailer after all. There might be some surprises. And I don’t mean cameos.

Just in case you want to know, here’s the very brief plot synopsis:

“BAYWATCH” follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.

Baywatch opens in theaters on May 26, 2017.
