It’s Christmas time, so I should be wrapping gifts and baking cookies, but instead, I’ve been coloring in my new Creepy Christmas coloring book!

That’s right, author and artist Sam Shearon has injected some terror into this holiday season with his adult coloring book Mister Sam Shearon’s Creepy Christmas: A Merry Macabre Coloring Book. Well, actually, as the book tells us, the creepy aspect has always been a part of the season, with tales of legendary creatures like Krampus, Wendigo, and the Abominable Snowman. For the traditionally innocuous elements, such as toys, snow globes, and even Rudolph, Shearon converts them into terrifying yet somehow still festive depictions just begging to be colorized.

I started off with one of the less-detailed drawings — “Gingerbread Men,” a trio of gingerbread treats who look pretty pissed about their predicament (they’ve been bitten into!). Next up was the “Candy Pain” page, which sees weaponized candy canes, and then “The Grimace Tree,” a demonized Christmas tree. Yes, I started with the less frightening ones, but I’m looking forward to tackling all the Krampus-themed pages and more.

Each of the 40 hand-drawn and inked illustrations is preceded by an accompanying poem that provides details about the subject matter.

While this coloring book is gear towards adults, an older child who appreciates the horror-infused humor (the presents infiltrated by a demon; Santa’s elves gone rogue) or who isn’t afraid to learn the more frightening folk tales of yore will probably enjoy this book, too. My little sister is 12 and whenever I visit, she keeps us all busy coloring. I’ve given her some other “dark” coloring books, and she gets a kick out of it, so I have no doubt she’ll enjoy going through Creepy Christmas as we await Santa’s arrival. She’ll be lucky to learn that she escaped the wrath of Krampus this year!

Another fun macabre coloring book to add to my collection.

The happiest time of the year is also the creepiest.

Winter has an even darker and richer lore than Halloween. For centuries, people have feared creatures from ancient legends born of this time of year. Tales such as giant hairy monsters who live in the mountains and will snatch you up and eat you were used to ensure children didn’t wander off in the snow and become lost.

These were indeed just stories … or were they?

This festive feast of fear contains 40 original hand-drawn and inked illustrations from a variety of traditional beliefs and legends from around the world, including British, North American, Nordic, Icelandic, Austrian, and Germanic folklore. Mister Sam Shearon’s Creepy Christmas features characters such as Krampus, Grýla, Santa Claws, Rabid Rudolph, the Grimace Tree, the Wendigo, the Snow Bear, the Yule Cat, the Abominable Snowman, and many more. Ready for you to bring to colorful life with fearsome festive cheer, each page is also accompanied with a poem—a guide to these creepy creatures from the season of ice and snow!
