Twin Peaks Showtime

Exciting news for fans of Twin Peaks awaiting word on when they’ll get to see Showtime’s revival of the series we first found out about way back in 2014.

It’s been officially revealed that the new season—which was originally planned to arrive sometime in 2016—will now premiere on May 21st at 9PM on Showtime. Also announced is that the new season, which features an insane 217-name cast, will not be a shorter 10-12 episode season we’re used to seeing on channel’s like this. Instead, the Twin Peaks revival will run for 18 hour-long episodes.

The premiere of the new season will be a two-hour special covering the first two episodes. After that, episodes three and four will be made available to watch on Showtime’s digital platform. So if you’re a real mega-fan who can’t wait for more, the option will be there to really dive into and roll around in four whole hours of new Twin Peaks right off the bat.

The announcement was made during Showtime’s presentation at the Television Critics Association by president David Nevins. He confirmed that instead of going in with a set number of episodes planned for the season, David Lynch actually filmed the entire season as one long movie and it was later determined how many episodes it would be.

Lynch also screened the entire season for Nevins and Showtime president of programming Gary Levine, complete with donuts to enjoy while watching. Of the show, Nevins described it as “the pure-heroin version of David Lynch,” which fitting to the original, “rewards close watching.”

Now that we know when we’ll get to see new Twin Peaks, the only question that remained was if this was all we could expect or if there would be more episodes in the future. Nevins was asked and answered this question as well. According to him, this specific season was designed as a single event with a beginning and end. But that said, he wasn’t willing to rule out the possibility of something new set in that world coming along in the future.

Below you can find some tweets related to the announcement and of the cast and crew in attendance at TCA 2017.
