Wouldn’t it be great if you could literally see the evil in the world? What if the evil that was in mankind was there by their choice? Maybe they made a bargain of sorts? Well, Darkness Visible #1, from writers Mike Carey (Unwritten, Lucifer, Girl with All the Gifts) and Arvind Ethan David (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), explores something quite similar to that concept. For you see, the evil does walk among us! In many cases, they are us.

It’s been eighty years since the demons came. And somehow mankind has been able to coexist with them, albeit uneasily. The reason being that the demons have no definitive shape until they bond with a human. This symbiotic relationship enables the demon to exist in the prime material plane and gives the human near immortality, at least that’s what everyone thinks.

For Detective Daniel Aston, there’s far more to it than that. You see, he’s part of the force that keeps the peace between the two sides. He sees the end results that most do not, the true face of evil given life. His wisdom is shared with his daughter as they make their way home one night, enabling the reader to get the low down on what’s what in this comic.

An unfortunate incident changes their plans as Aston is called to the scene of a crime with his child in tow. Events transpire that become almost tragic for our protagonist but he prevails at the last moment. Sadly, this happy ending is not meant to be as fate takes a hand once more. By the end of this first issue we see our detective risk everything for his little girl, as any parent would. Left at a massive cliffhanger of an ending, the reader (at least this one) is jonesing for the next piece of the story.

From bestselling author and screenwriter Mike Carey (Unwritten, Lucifer, Girl with All the Gifts) and Arvind Ethan David (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency) comes an all-new, original world of darkness and demons. When the demons came, humanity reluctantly learned to share the world with another sentient race.

Eighty years later, this uneasy co-existence has spawned an endless terrorist conflict. Detective Daniel Aston, charged with being the thin blue line between the two sides, is tested to the limit when a demon sets up house inside his soul. But to save his daughter, he’ll pay any price-including genocide.
