James Gunn Says ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 3’ Is Happening

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

We’re still a month and a half or so away from the arrival of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in theaters, but early indications are that things are going about as good as they can be for the sequel.

So good, in fact, that a third movie looks to already be a sure thing. James Gunn, who directed the first and second Guardians, said recently that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is “for sure” happening.

See what he had to say about the next movie and the Guardians’ involvement in Avengers: Infinity War below.

Gunn had a chat with Complex about the upcoming movie The Belko Experiment, which Gunn wrote the screenplay for and was planning to direct for many years before becoming involved with the Marvel universe.

When asked about Guardians 3, Gunn was quick to state that it was happening. What’s not so clear, is what the director’s involvement will actually be with the movie:

“There will be a Guardians 3, that’s for sure. We’re trying to figure it out. I’m trying to figure out what I want to do really, that’s all it is. I got to figure out where I want to be, what I want to spend the next three years of my life doing. You know, I’m going to make another big movie; is it the Guardians or something else? I’m just going to figure it out over the next couple of weeks.”

It’s not the first time we’ve heard early words that sounded like Guardians 3 has been in the plans for a while. Marvel head Kevin Feige has said in the past that the movie is “up there” for their future plans.

As for Gunn, sometimes a filmmaker can only do so much with a franchise, and perhaps he feels he’s given everything he could possibly give to these first two movies and it’s time for some new blood. It’s not something that’s unusual; Jon Favreau directed the first two Iron Man movies before moving on. Joss Whedon took on the first two Avengers movies before the Russo brothers took over. But clearly Gunn isn’t ready to walk away just yet. He might still have a little raging fire left for the Guardians. So we’ll find out soon enough if it’s enough for him to commit to one more adventure with those characters, or if he’s ready for something new.

Jumping to Avengers: Infinity War, Gunn was also asked about the Guardians’ involvement in that movie:

“You know listen, I don’t think we should overstate things that it is an Avengers movie, but the Guardians are a part of the cosmic universe, they’re a part of Thanos’ stories, so, they are in there, and they have, not the biggest, but, an integral part to that.”

See more of what Gunn had to say about this and The Belko Experiment over at Complex.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5th.
